Radium Springs is a freshwater spring in the town of Albany, situated along the Flint River. Though it is located in southwest Georgia, its fluorescent water actually originates from what is known as the Florida Aquifer (boasting the highest concentration of freshwater springs in the world). What makes Radium Springs so special, as you can probably infer from its name and bluish glow, is the natural presence of Radium in its waters. Believe it or not, people use to swim in these radioactive waters by the thousands. In fact, many proclaimed the spring to have healing properties both long before and well after the Radium was detected. Though swimming is not allowed today, its prohibition is not for the reasons you might think. In this video we will detail the history and mystery surrounding Radium Springs in addition to challenging some of the hysteria which surrounds Radium and radioactivity in general. Join us for a trip and perhaps a little splash in one of America’s most unique bodies of water. And you never know, we may see a giant radioactive catfish or 2.
