Chalkokondyles's text:
This winter, however, the [Ottoman] emperor having spent it in his royal [palaces], sent for Vlad, the son of Drakoules, ruler of Dacia, having his younger brother with him; the latter becoming his lover, he kept him by his side. It happened, however, when he became emperor, that, wishing to be intimate with this child, he was a little [short] of being killed by him - while the former, taking the reign, was preparing [to go] against Karaman. For being in love with the child, he called him to a talk and, as an honour, invited him to drink in [his] bed. The child, of course, suspecting nothing of all that he would suffer from the king, seeing the emperor pounce upon him with such reckonings, rejected him, not consenting to intercourse with the emperor. As he kissed him with displeasure, the child, pulling out a knife, struck the emperor in the thigh, and so, running away at once, went his way. The doctors, however, dressed the emperor's wound. The child, climbing up a tree nearby, hid himself in it. The Sultan gathered his things and went. The child then came down from the tree, and not long afterwards went to the gate and became the emperor's lover. For [the emperor] was accustomed, no less, to make use of those who shared this way of life with him, for with them he always spent day and night, and with those of another race the emperor was accustomed not to deal for much, but [only] a little. To the brother of this child, Vlad, the emperor entrusted the rule of Dacia.
