I think it's worth it. I'm using it to prepare myself for the conptia security + exam. I can say it's been a big help. When I first took a Sec+ practice exam I scored incredibly low. After reaching the 5th course, I'm now scoring above 80% on practice exams.

I’m almost done with this course. I am currently an intelligence analyst in the us army. I plan on finishing this course paid for by the army then taking a 3 week in person course to get my sec+. I should be done with these by the end of this summer and by July 2025 is when I plan on getting a job in the Los Angeles. I’ll probably take more courses in order to overall prepare myself more. From what I have been seeing in the LA area are entry level cyber security analyst roles no less than a $90k starting salary really. Having a secret or Top Secret clearance can also help you land a 6 figure starting salary from what it looks like on LinkedIn. Just got to work for a national defense oriented company.

This works for someone who has years of IT experience working as a help desk/desktop support/technical support roles. Leverage this certificate plus the security+ will be very beneficial. Obtain also some comptia certs like A+ and Network+. If you really want to standout, get the Cisco ccna and higher certs.

@5DK7 While these courses are great to take for added learning, do not expect the certificate to hold any sort of recognizable value pertaining to “Most” employers. Your plan is going to be foiled if you don’t also go for the CompTIA and/or the Cisco certifications. Not many people get jobs with just these “not so recognized” coursera certifications. However….I have heard of many positive reviews that these courses and materials are very good for learning the main “need to know” information for the role. Do know that many employers highly favor the Comptia/Cisco certifications more. Especially with not having any IT Work experience. So aim for those and pass the exams after you finish this course. Be aware, Cybersecurity requires a lot of “need to know” skills across the board along the lines A+, Network+, Security+.

I’m currently taking the google cybersecurity course (3 out of 8 finished). There’s a 30% discount for the CompTIA Security+ exam after completion, but I’m hearing from people who’ve personally completed the CompTIA Security+, explaining that you absolutely need knowledge from previous CompTIA exams such as the A+ and Network+. What you can do is study to see if cybersecurity is something you really want to dive in deeper and if the course can give you that then you can think about upgrading your laptop after you took some lessons already and you’re 100% sure

@@user-bi9iz1vc7xyou could probably get away with 8 gigs of RAM if the courses host practice on the the coursera platform itself, but you will absolutely want 16gigs if you even think of installing/running Virtual Machines for practice on your own machine. VMs always run like crap if you run them on bare minimum requirements and chugs your system the more power you give to the VM.

@@chisomo8088 you don't need any knowledge as they teach very basic things but useful ones. Well they teach you commands for Linux like reading hidden files and giving access permissions using sudo, also basic SQL commands in the Linux and SQL module, there's important theory like NIST CSF frameworks, and also there are some portfolio activities like writing an incident report/response using NIST cyber security framework, networking concepts like firewall,VPN ,protocols, also how to read Tcpdump logs, packet sniffing. I'm on course -5(Assets threats and vulnerabilities) now which feels like repeated information.

I currently hold A+ and Net+ and I honestly don’t feel fully ready Job wise. Sure I may get an interview but get hired? Google cc certification / isc2 CC /security+ all these are foundation of cyber security. Don't get discouraged if you didn't get job instantly. Focus on your path upgrade your skills day to day , up-to-date with news of cyber security happenings. Most of the entry level job looks for SOC /SIEM /incident response/basic Linux and python skills . learn about terminologies like SIEM SOAR playbook , EDR XDR MDR,NGFW(you can say in interview though I don't have hands on experience I'm familiar with these concepts) and OSI layer, TCP IP ,MITRE attack , cyber kill chain concepts , OWASP top 10 etc. Try to focus on free trial and free videos on SIEM tool or any available open source tool . Don't go deep with costly courses ,many free resources are available , get hands on with lab( start with basic Wireshark / basic Linux command for SOC analyst /log analysis etc/ utilize splunk free cloud trial and videos ) most of the Cyber training like defender / TCM security / infosec etc have free 7 day trial use that and learn and take notes as you go . I recommend to follow blackhills training they offer pay what you can training it's really awesome hands-on training with lab . Please check below courses as well : 1. Go for security+ as many entry level job asks for security+ as baselevel mandatory cert 9.Exabeam SIEM : you can mail that team and ask for training resources. 10.Udemy : get Udemy hands on training courses (splunk ,sentinel , crowdstrike edr etc)when they are on sale for 12.99 $ don't go for costlier one .

@@cardenkevin it’s a win win though…for someone with 0 experience, taking your google cert is a massive help to breaking you into the game..then you take your security+ immediately after for 30% off since now you have a better understanding of the subject…instead of going right into security + with no knowledge.

@@jerk_berk That’s not a win win lol. People are spending multiple months on this, which actually defeats the purpose of the “30% off”. I took this course in a single day, and i can say that its an extremely basic baby’s first course in Security Awareness.
