Under no circumstaces should you attempt entry at this location. Visitors are not welcome due to commercial security and health and safety. I got special permission and had to be escorted. These are just some of the shots taken that day. I believe there is planning permission in place for housing and industrial units.
Security here is like Fort Knox, believe me.
The original design drawing numbers and descriptions are shown and were taken from an original 1940's site plan. Of course when the USN used the base later, they adapted and changed the use of many buildings and indeed added a few of their own. A really amazing place and I am grateful to the owner for allowing me access and the chance to get some images.
If you need to use any of the images then please ask and I can send you the high res originals.
These are just some of the images shot on the day.

I was there from 1983 to 1985. Worked at the radio station. It's strange to see it now, all just sitting there rotting away. I'd like to go back, but as they say, you never can go back. It's a different world now, and what took place on that base is all obsolete.

My dad was in the USN and we were stationed here in 69-70. I remember walking those airfields with my dad, and my sister attended school in a one room school house that sat on the old airfield. We attended classes in Edzell until space could be found on the base for us. We LOVED Scotland, and my own twin daughters are planning a visit with their husbands this year. This was my favorite place until I spent time in Alaska. No castles but it is beautiful.

I was lucky to visit this base with 2422 (Arbroath) Sqdn of the Air Training Corps back in the '60s while the USN were there & we were fed in their all ranks dining hall & treated to a drill display by the Marine detachment. Then again in 1971. while my girlfriend's sister was courting a USN guy we were in the Hideaway. Great memories & my first taste of Budweiser. While on a visit to Canada 15 years ago when we crossed the border from America on I95 the Canadian border guard turned out to be an ex-USN guy married to a Canadian & had served many years at Edzel.

@@GrahamInnes1 yes I agree most of the old RAF airfields end up being developed so sad really. What I find extraordinary is the Battle of Britain was one of the most challenging times in British history every RAF base played it's part in the demise of the luftwaffe. So surely these sites should be preserved for future generations that's my opinion I'm guessing housing and commerce are more important.

Worked there for 10 years up until it closed. Would like to see inside Bld. 300 and 340 spent most of my time in there, if you think it's secure now should have seen it when the USN were in residence.

Unfortunately I was not allowed into the buildings due to the asbestos etc. So I did not see any of those however I do know that there was a cinema and various other social venues.

Yes, I had been trying to get permission for 30 years to get on site. I got lucky. They really don't like visitors. All that history. It will allbbe gone soon. Glad you liked the shots.

Did you notice if the modern computer center (mainframes) building still existed? I visited in early 2000's and remember the security fence still intact and the power all still on.

Not sure because I was not allowed on to the old airfield site. However, from the internet over a year ago I found an article about an offshore company doing some R&D there. May be that or could just be the fact that there are masses of expensive offshore equipment stored there.
