I am very proud to say, my Dad redesigned the parachute release mechanism which was proving hit and miss due to manufacturing anomalies. The cowl was hand made and each one varied in size and shape resulting in occasional sticking (wasn't enough made to warrant a press tool). My dad redesigned the mechanism to accommodate this variation. Love you Dad.

At Lossiemouth we had a T-bird that kept having problems with releasing the brake parachute, it was checked numerous times and we could not find out what was wrong. Eventually we checked and found it was always the same instructor in the back cockpit, we asked him to sit in the cockpit and explain what he did. he used to rest his hand on the release handle. If we did that, you could not operate the front cockpit handle. changed the rear cockpit handle, problem solved.

Lived in only a couple of miles away from RAF Coltishall till I was in my 30s. Used to love seeing them fly past on manoeuvres, swear I could almost see the pilot face they came in so low one day. Lol. Was disappointed when they transferred the last squadron and closed down the airbase. Was the last Battle of Britain airbase still in use at the time if my memory serves me correctly.

It's small, packs a punch, and has over wing pylons. It's as close to perfect a fighter bomber can get.

Amazing jet...and we got rid of it,like the harrier! and have spent billions of taxpayers money since (F35) and this thing could land and take off on roads and fields..perfect for the European theatre or home defence.I spent a summer at RAF coltishall in the 1970s with the ATC when it was a front line station.

It's an ancient plane by modern standards, it would get smoked by an f35. Your letting your sentimentality cloud your judgement. People like you seem to think we should have vulcans and lancasters still.

@swedishvolvo It's called Airframe Hours. Once they reach those it costs far more. Plus certain airframes have only a certain amount of modernity. Jag wouldn't cope under new tech. Besides government have to cut before new aircraft are available

Thanks for this. Jaguar, maybe because it wasn't a multi role type, was underrated. It took a long while for it to be proven in major combat, but it performed very well and it's 1990's upgrades for the RAF ones, made it a potent type until the end. None were lost to hostile fire in the 1991 Gulf War, British or French.

@Griffy1989 I still think it would be cheaper to continue building this aircraft new while they retire the older ones for parts or sell them to other nations. This cheap fighter/bomber seems like an attractive export to countries with limited defense budgets. The Jaguar seems to be a lot more versatile then the F-5.
@richardvernon3174 жыл бұрын
F-5 was designed as a light weight fighter bomber. Jaguar is basically a Bomber.

Basicaly was ! part of the reason it evolved from just a simple trainer to a full on attack aircraft i think all the frustration built up in BAC about TSR 2 basicly ment they couldn't help but design a mini TSR 2

@swedishvolvo It's probably a combination of the US and Russia having the market cut out for supplying cheap fighters to poor nations and the fact that SEPECAT as a body doesn't exist anymore. You'd have get all the plans and equipment for manufacturing them together which I imagine when a plane is built between two countries might be problematic.

Shame the engines were under powered though, hence the need for reheat on take off. It was a mandatory call from the runway caravan if they didn't light the tail up.

Still flying in Indian Air Force Service. Most of the RAF ones were on their last legs airframe hours wise when the type was retired. The RAF did have quite a few low hours GR1A air frames in store but they would have needed shed loads of modifications to bring them up to GR3 standard. Of course if your talking about the Nigerian ones, they were hardly used.

Bet the penny pinchers at the MOD are kicking themselfs they took jag out early, can you think of a more perfect plane for afganistan, it was built for close air support and recon plus uses rough strips, can be serviced in a field, its cheap and since all the airframes are maxing out you wouldn't need to worry about looseing a few to accidents and failures

I'm from Preston (where they were made, Strand Rd), they were upgraded late 80's, I was told they had to remake a lot of the tooling/jigging as it had all been scrapped, they thought they wouldn't need it again. Does anybody know the stretch of road where it took of and landed for the cameras? I was told the stretch of M6 north of Preston, there's a 4-5 mile stretch dead straight. Anybody?
@williamrance50866 жыл бұрын
I'm from Preston too. I remember a hundred or so Jaguars ordered for the RAF went to the Shah of Persia's airforce instead. A couple of months later the Shah was deposed and the rest is history. The same happened with the Saunders Roe Hovercraft my ship took to Iran for the Shah's navy. Someone took their eye of the ball then, and we are paying for it today!

Hello all. Regarding the placement of missiles AIM-9 above the wings of the RAF Jaguars: caused this location, similar to that of the tanks of the Lightning, any problems?
@richardvernon3174 жыл бұрын
Nope, the overwing installation was standard on the International model with the Magic IR AAM. The RAF just modified the Wing Fence to put a LAU-7 and Winder on that location. If memory serves there were holes in the top of the wing to allow access to cabling as well. Lightnings issue was that it was lugging around a large fuel tank, not a small AAM.
