It was back in the 80's, if I remember correctly, that the Oregon Air National Guard flew their F-4 Phantoms in Exercise Red Flag, going up against the cream of the fighter elite from around the world. Eagles, Falcons and more went up against the storied Vietnam fighters and their (very) experienced pilots... And got their assets handed to them by an Air National Guard unit flying planes that were probably operational before the younger guns from the Air Force, Marines, Navy and other countries graduated kindergarten.
