Back in 1970 … and when stationed at RAF Watton, I used have my morning jog around this runway 😢 …. Happy and some sad memories

Had 2 glider flights there in 2005. A Sedbergh and a Viking with the VGS as an instructor in the ATC. Sad to compare my video of those flights with this.

As an 10/11 year old boy, my dear old Dad used to visit the airfield almost daily. This was 1943/4, and the yanks serviced and repaired B24 Liberators on the south side of the runway. Dad got friendly with them, and they would give him baseball caps, balls and bats, candy, and cigarettes ‘for mom’. One of the airmen’s 12 year old niece wrote to dads primary school, and she became pen friends with the whole school! I actually received copies of the letters he wrote, from West Virginia library a few years back!

We were stationed at RAF Watton, living in MQ's, having been posted from Gibraltar...I'll never forget the big bang one afternoon, really thought that a plane had crashed...but in fact it was a young Naval officer who panicked on take off, that the plane was flying too .low, and he pulled the ejector seat handle...the canopy flew off not many feet above and the poor young chap landed hard with his spine being crushed into his brain ....the plane landed safely...

I visited Watton Radar in 1983 with the Air Cadets....whilst being shown the monitoring section a couple of the Operators told some of us that they had recently observed an irregularity on the monitors.... traveling at incredible speed on the screens and due to pass near to the base some had gone outside to visually observe ...nothing was seen or heard. Interestingly ,years later the Rendlesham forest incident story came out. I have often wondered were the two occurances interconnected! ..... Nice footage .

Finners Hi, I don’t know who owns the land unfortunately, lots of people walk dogs in the area etc. Sorry I can’t be of more help. 👍
