It is remarkable how many matches these two have played on clay that have turned on one or two points. Fed had match points and a huge fifth set lead in MC and Rome in Monte Carlo respectively in 2006 and lost both. A sitter in this one at 4:2 in the 2nd and bricks a dropshot. A few points later Rafa shanks a return and Federer whiffs on match point. THEN Federer misses another dropper last year in the FO final when serving for the set. The guy just wasn't made to beat Rafa on clay.

Honestly, Fed can play for as long as he can walk for all I care. It took seeing him play in-person for me to truly grasp this, but basically, since his early days, that guy Roger has always made any matchup -- whether against top-ranked players or against journeymen like Takao Suzuki -- interesting to watch. And that's all I want from tennis. Interesting matchups; I could care less who wins.

Tennis, a most unique sport. It is combat without contact. Like chess, so much of it is played between the ears. Federer is mentally tough, no doubting that, he would never have won so much if he wasn't. But his contests with Nadal seemed to make him do things he would never have against any other player.

Both are amazing. Nadal has the best backhand in the game no doubt and his speed is amazing. Federer is almost like a robot showing no feelings and hitting the same strokes effortlesly. They're both the best in my opinion because they each have different traits that make them amazing contenders. They're is really no true great, but if i were to pick i think Del Potro has a chance of being the next great if he gets back to normal after his injury is healed.

The reason Nadal has such a good record against Fed is that Nadal has good hands, smooth drop shots, and a good backhand ANd he is more athletic. So Federer will play longer and win more trophies in the long run, but jut tihnk if there were 4 more with playstyles like Nadal/Djokovic and they hit their peaks at different times. Fed would have maybe half the trophies he has won . Then everything would equal out, and then people would say "why does Fed play like that". But that is hypothetical.
is there something wrong if the future players have styles like Nole or Rafa?

@Rafathaman94 I do. Seriously I am fluent in Spanish, I don't know if you are. There are things they are saying about nadal that english commentators wouldn't dare say about Murray. English commentators aren't perfect but they tend to hide their partiality quite well. There is a british commentator called andrew castle who fawns a bit over Murray but not quite like this.

Just wondering why players should choose Nadals type of play? If I was a huge tennis talent at young age I rather preferred Federers style. Not just because he can play 4-5 years longer because for me it's the best way. 17 grand slams, 76 titles and 294 weeks as nr 1. Even though i love the way both Nadal and Djokovic play, I gotta admit I adore Rogers. The way he plays.. MAN, Those hands.. Smooth drop shots, precisely forehands and wicked backhands. Not to mention he's the one with most class!

He might have more slams... or we might have different play styles because players change with the way courts and equipment changes. That is why we do not see anymore McEnroes playing (at least successfully). We could guess Federer might have won more, or maybe lost more, who knows.

Btw his injury around 2009 French Open wasn't that bad if he steamrolled through his first 3 oponents without losing a set only to lose in a tight 4-setter to a brilliant, enjoying one of "those" days, Soderling. Imo Nadal wasn't injured as badly as people think, he overplayed himself with so many tournaments prior to the French Open.

Rafa is a power player and plays with a lot of spin which makes it difficult to play against because they have to hit the ball bery high. Fed has one of the best forehands and dropshots in the game. I think RF is a more complete player over all. Would be cool to see if they were the same age who would have dominated the tennis from 04-09. The fact that Fed has been nr 1 for 295 weeks and named the best tennis player ever. If Nadal would've been better he wouldn't been nr 2 for such a long time.
@polychronio11 жыл бұрын
that's because Roger wasn't used to Nadal's unusual style at first. Roger won 5 matches out of 7 matches they met before Roger got sudden unfortunate illness and almost won Rome Masters which would make it 6 matches out of 7 matches and 7-7 tie. eventhough they mostly met in clay, the H2H was close meaning that Roger lead H2H by much when they would meet equal amount on other courts. Roger dominated Nadal for 6 years. Roger had been number 1 and almost won everything for 6 years before got sick

@8382sam Nad unforced error (1-0), Fed winner (2-0), Nad winner (2-1), Fed unf error (2-2), Nad unf error (3-2), Fed winner dropshot (4-2), Fed unf error dropshot (4-3), Fed unf error (4-4), Fed unf error (4-5), Fed unf error (4-6), Fed winner (5-6), lucky point for Nadal... I'm a Nadal fan, but Rafa did nothing good to win this tie-break. Federer should have just kept the ball in play and win the set easily. I'm just saying :)

Predicting anything right now is pointless. In 2007 everyone was saying that Federer can keep winning 3 Slams a year till he's 30, already in 2008 people started to write him off and said that Nadal is going to dominate, then that Nadal could win the calendar Slam in 2009, a couple more months later many thought that Nadal is done and dusted, after Federer's 2010 AO victory we thought that Fed had a chance of a calendar Slam, now everyone's writing Fed off.

@DonxRaul All that question proves is that Nadal's physical playtsyle is going to bog him down when he gets older, that isnt because Federe is better, but because he plays differntly.Unless tennis starts to change in another direction, we will start seeing more Nadal like players than Federer like players. Look at Djokovic and how his game is and he probably wont be playing much past late20's either.

Alright I see what you mean. But at that time Fed kept winning against Rod, Safin, Hewitt and Davydenko for example who would win a lot more if it wouldn't be for Fed. After that he held Murray, Djoker, Soderling, Berdych and some times Nadal from the nr 1 spot after that. No doubt that Fed has problems with Nadal. Would be a delight if they were the same age!

@89Pleasek He had some 5 and 4 setters that he won at wimbledon. Those were close. Ur just a Nadal hater. I could say the same with Nadal in 2009 coz he was injured and played while having those knee problems. He said that he was suprised that he came so far in some tournaments coz he was injured.

The reason he has such a good record is because Fed refuses to play a different type of play which he needs against Nadal. He want to win his way and there is no other. You can hear him say he played a good game even though he lost, because he played the way he wanted. Like when he lost to Berdych in the Open..

I think the real question here is..Can nadal imitate Federer's success over him (e.g. London) if we switched the age gape around?..Think about it logicically...Nadal would be about 29-30..consider too how physical demanding nadal's game is. Federer would be 24-25 arguable in his prime. Could a older nadal beat a younger prime Federer, just as an older Federer has beaten a younger nadal who has said to be in his prime? The answer to this question will prove who is greater

1) Federer's domination is over, that's for sure. But he's capable of winning 2-4 more Slams, that's for sure 2) Nadal's only dominating clay. He's won 1 grass court tournament (Wimbledon 2010) since July 2008 and 1 hard court tournament (2010 US Open) since March 2009 (Indian Wells). That's not what I call domination. I agree with the rest.
