man, these new rules make karate super boring.

The hugging sessions that used to happen before those rules weren't very exciting either. What the competitors need to do is start mixing up techniques. There are so many different kicks and punches and ways of executing them but everyone just resorts to the same stand still - maete tsuki, clinch, counter gyako and mawashi and ura mawashi. It's crazy how low quality their fighting is at this level

animakuz I absolutely agree. the beauty of karate is in the versatility in its athletes. I agree that karate as a martial art is not solely a kicking art like tkd, we have many hand techniques that are neglected. Nage waza (leg sweeps) I still thankfully see, but the grapples and throws that are a fundamental part of karate through our kihon and kata are disappearing. I don't blame the players for not executing them. It is the bid for Olympic inclusion that the WKF had to devolve it's arsenal of allowed scoring techniques in the name of safety. Looking back at (imo) the most exciting WKF world's, 2004, you will see so many more glorious (and scoring) throws and kicks and strikes. At the end of the day we see the budo in those techniques and not this fluffy stuff I see now.
