This was the last tournament of peak Nadal. After the back injury it was the final nail in the coffin for him and he was just never quite the same in the following years. His movement in this AO tournament was so free and his forehand was at peak levels even taking the ball early and it is just unfortunate that his body betrayed him at the worst time and stopped him from making history. Winning this tournament would've made Nadal the first player ever to win every grand slam at least 2 times at only 27 years of age which would've also made him the undisputed greatest player of all time. Out of all Nadal's loses in finals the loss in the final after this match will forever remain his most heartbreaking as most people were sure he would've finished it off.

They knew Stan was waiting in the final; which for both of them (they thought) was a guaranteed victory. This was the de facto final in everyone’s eyes. Federer could have won 30 slams if he was mentally tougher in big moments against Rafa/Novak. Super sad, his skills were so much higher.

This AO 2014 was his to win it (no one thinks he would have lost to Stan in normal circumstances), too bad for his injury. Rafa was very very close to win AO at least 4 times. You add the missing ones due to injury and everyone should realize AO was actually a really good place for Rafa, where he always played great tennis.
@patcisz347411 күн бұрын
@alltrack_r Nadal would've also been the first player to ever win the double career grand slam in that 2014 AO at only the age of 27. Unfortunately his body betrayed him at the worst possible moment and obviously an injured Nadal was just not going to overcome a peak level Wawrinka. I believe if the back injury never happened Nadal would've beat Wawrinka in 4 or 5 very close sets and the coarse of tennis history would change as Nadal would've maintained his peak level on hard courts for a couple more years giving 2015 Djokovic very tough competition. Djokovic would not have it so easy in 2015 if Nadal remained healthy.
