I watched this in full today, and it was spectacular. I think this is the highest quality men’s match ever. The 2008 Wimbledon final had a better buildup and more historical importance, and the 2018 Wimbledon semifinal between Nadal and Djokovic is more important in retrospect, but in terms of quality, I think that this match is the best.
@SJ-di5zu4 жыл бұрын
Owen Lewis For sure. Looking at first serve percentage, winners-UE, this match was insane quality. And when you actually watch it, Verdasco was killing the ball, Nadal’s backhand was on fire, both of them were moving really well but Nadal was literally everywhere. Maybe the best defensive performance ever against an offensive explosion from Verdasco. Not to mention all the classic points, and the 4th set tiebreak
@owenlewis63994 жыл бұрын
Sachin Johri yeah this was peak offense against peak defense (Nadal hit 52 winners even as the more defensive player). The classic rallies are as good as any I’ve seen.
@SJ-di5zu4 жыл бұрын
Owen Lewis Yeah and both were serving incredibly well. Nadal barely hit any unforced errors with his 53 winners and Verdasco hit like 95 winners and had many more winners than unforced errors.
@owenlewis63994 жыл бұрын
Sachin Johri Nadal was hitting an average of five unforced errors per set. He hardly gave away anything. And 95 winners is absurd. It’s crazy to think that he still lost the match. Nadal probably played a part in bringing this sky-high level from Verdasco, but at the same time Verdasco was unlucky to play someone with defense as good as Nadal’s.
@SJ-di5zu4 жыл бұрын
Owen Lewis Verdasco had been playing very well all tournament, and so had Nadal. The level Verdasco showed in this match was scary. He was smashing winners like Wawrinka, creating angles only Rafa can create, still decently quick, and serving very well. Rafa was making no mistakes, his forehand was crazy as normal, and his backhand was on fire. Plus he served very well. This was a higher quality match than the final honestly, even though the final was incredible as well.
@SJ-di5zu4 жыл бұрын
2:45 did I hear that right? 53 winners-8 unforced errors?!!! That’s insane
@shangclockmania6168 Жыл бұрын
First set which was by far the closest with 6:4, not even 6:0 or 6:1 (in terms of duration), Nadal had 17 winners and 1!!! unforced error. I like Tommy Haas, former world number two, two times GS semifinalist. That match was an absolute thrashing. Even "Virtua Tennis" King would have lost against a simply unplayable Nadal.
@SJ-di5zu Жыл бұрын
@@shangclockmania6168Thanks for the response, no matter how late haha! I couldn’t ever find the match online but it sounds incredible. Both Nadal and Verdasco were in insane form this AO; throw Federer in there as well. Verdasco beat Murray and Tsonga (defending runner-up) back to back, but I’d argue he played better against Nadal than he did in either of those matches. Nadal hadn’t dropped a set until the Verdasco match and had that godly 53 winners-8 unforced errors performance! What makes it even more impressive is that Nadal didn’t have a big serve, so he was hitting most of his winners off the ground with forehands and backhands. This wasn’t like some Wimbledon serve-fest between Isner and Anderson.

Verdasco was at his peak that tournament....I even think Federer would've lost to this Verdasco had he reached the final....shows how much of a mental beast Rafa is to beat both of them playing two epic matches
@theobecquet84774 жыл бұрын
I personally don't think that Verdasco would have beaten Federer in the final, for 4 obvious reasons: 1) Verdasco had never played a grand slam final before this (Well he actually never played a grand slam final at all) 2) As much as Federer can choke on break points or match points sometimes, Verdasco is a way bigger choker than Federer It's not even close 3) Roger doesn't like to play Rafa particularly because of Rafa's top spin forehand that is hard to control but Verdasco doesn't hit with so much top spin like Rafa he strikes more flat, more cleanly and that's why he has never beaten Federer in his career 4) This semi was exhausting and nobody can be as fit as 2008/Early 2009 Rafa (except Djoker 2011), Verdasco would have ran out of energy in the final. I may be wrong, we'll never know but based on these facts I assume Verdasco would have lost, I have nothing against him, he's really an exciting player to watch but to me there's no way he beats Roger in the final and I'm not a Federer fan

I just think that it would be very interesting, and perhaps that could be the point behind our other friend's comment, to have this Verdasco on Federer's side of the draw.. Your first three reasons still stand, almost on their entirety, so Federer is still the clear obvious but it would be an awesome match as well.. Amazing for Verdasco to produce this kind of tennis.. Shame for so many of this generation's players to have their chances taken away by the best players of all time.. Order them according to taste.. McEnroe on the espn commentary for the final said that he spoke with Verdascos coach the next day after the semi, and he told him he was so bad physically that he may have even had to pull out of the final had he won. Verdasco was not used to going deep into majors and constantly playing best of five. Nadal obviously was plus his game has always been so hard to Federer to beat (especially at this time, and when Fed was still reeling from the Wimbledon final the year before). This is evident in his shot making during the final, going for too much and hitting into the open spaces trying for winners, letting Nadal make the runs for crucial winners as he knew Fed was not gonna never hitting behind him in opposite direction. I think we definitely got the most historically significant final, plus it still remains Nadals only Aussie open...unto this year??
@connorism693 жыл бұрын
@@theobecquet8477 I don't think reason number 1 is a good one. This was his first semi-final, if I recall, and he reached an insane level here. We have no firm grounds upon which to assert he would have choked in the final. And as for reason 2, I am not sure of his record regarding choking. We need to be careful of anachronisms with that, as I know he choked a few times in tournaments many years after this one, but we cannot soundly project that tendency back onto this period. Especially given how well he played in this match. I think reason 4 is dubious as well, as a match between Federer and Verdasco would likely be much shorted, given the way they played at the time. There would probably be a lot of winners and shorter rallies. Contrastively, Nadal hits lots of rally shots without really putting balls away. For that reason, matches drag on longer than they otherwise might. I doubt a match between Verdasco (especially as he was playing here) would have dragged on long. It would be the battle of the forehands against Federer. And let's not forget that Nadal backed up and beat Federer in a long match in the final, so I see no reason to think Verdasco couldn't have lasted for 3 hours or so (at least). Verdasco's coach claimed otherwise, but one should take that with a grain of salt after a loss. I think reason 3 is why he would have lost to Federer. Federer plays much better against big-hitters than Nadal does. Nadal has always struggled against big-hitting underdogs, and this match was no exception. As great as Verdasco was playing, Federer probably would have beaten him, as Verdasco's style doesn't worry him as much.
@TheBrass183 жыл бұрын
@@connorism69 also one reason Federer finds it so difficult to beat Nadal is because he is a lefty. Nadal keeps hitting high bouncing top spin forehands to Federer (weaker) backhands. He keeps hitting it to his backhand until it cracks or breaks. I seen a lot of Nadal-Federer matches have Nadal has the open court to fire a winner on Federer forehand side and yet Nadal hits punishing topspin balls to Federer backhand side, till he draws the error from Federer. Think it’s mind games from Nadal so that Federer loses confidence in his backhand, and doubts himself to even put the ball back in play, and Federer has the run around his backhand to hit forehands.

that is nadal for y'all. I don't particularly like spaniards and portuguese but I absolutely love this guy... I mean, love him as a player cause I'm not gay :) ..... I remember what a commentator had said about him in one of the GS tournaments (don't remember which one).... he had said that during one of his first encounters with Federer (possibly in quite the first one ever) when FedEx was leading 2 sets to 0 one of Nadal's close relatives (his uncle, or father, I don't remember) had called him during a match break to tell him that it's ok if he loses because he loses to federer so he shouldn't feel bad about it but rather enjoy the game and lose with dignity. To which Rafa had responded "father, I'll not lose this game. Federed might defeat me, but I'll not lose the game". And then he beat FedEx 3-2 in that game lol. Some people in his circle of close friends / relatives (again, I don't remember who) has also said that Rafa plays every point like it's the last one and that he hates losing even one point, which you can see from the way he chases every single, meaningless point and ends it with a winner... nah, scratch that! He ends it with a shocker like the 2 points you've referenced here. To beat Nadal you have to... 1) be the best tennis player in the entire history of this sport, past, present and future (which is impossible because Rafa is that player and he can't defeat himself lol); 2) be in the greatest shape of your life; 3) be in the right mood for tennis even more than you're in mood for living; 4) play 2-3x better then the best you could hypothetically play if perfection existed; 5) have both God and luck on your side; Only by meeting these 5 requirements you can confidently say that you can beat Nadal. But only say it, because actually beating him is a whole different story :) Yeah, yeah, I know that soon after these matches a new contender (Nole) to the throne of the best player in the world had emerged which had beaten Rafa wherever they met, but the thing with Nole is that - he is extremely inconsistent and mentally fragile. He goes from Godlike to pathetic and back to Godlike multiple times during a set. Had Nole had Rafa's mental strength and consistency I would have genuinely admitted that Nole is the absolute best tennis player in the entire history of tennis (he still is my favorite player ever, though). But otherwise, I think that overall Rafa is slightly better (like 1-5%, not more) than Djokovic, the problem with Nadal is that he's a physical player more than a technical one, and the constant pressure he's put on his body is now taking its toll. You can clearly see him clenching his teeth quite early in games nowadays, and it's only because of his physical style of play. But had he had the physical stamina and vitality he's had at 18 years of age I think he would have defeated Djokovic more than this. Anyway, amazing player, really,. It's a delight watching him fight for every meaningless point and win in in such fashion (those top-spinned passing shots and shots along the line are his trademark... and it's a very enjoyable trademark if you asked me). Great player...

I doubt it. Verdasco's leg issue would have probably carried over into the final for one and even if that wasn't a problem, his return and defense while good, were not elite. He would have had to be as on fire as he was in this match and probably dropped his unforced errors in half to win. I honestly think only Nadal could have defeated Roger that night. Still one of the great physical 2-match performances I've ever seen. The recovery necessary to go into a final and win in another five sets against a player of Roger's caliber is insane. Roger was totally fresh. I just think Verdasco, who was in the best shape I believe in his career, would have worn down like he did here in the fifth set. Only a completely on fire, performance of his career (even better than this one) and done in three sets would have netted him a win in the final.

Why don't you try uploading a better version.. you don't pay for these free videos.. so don't complain.

I remember this. Not yet a Rafa fan and I wanted Verdasco to win so that Federer could have won the final easily lol

watched this incredible match after Rafa's 2 AO win. the turning moment in this match would be the last game where Verdasco double faulted twice , that cost him the match.

If Verdasco's margin over the net was 6 inches higher on his backhand, this could have been a completely different match #hindsight2020

Requesting AO to upload this full match in 1080p as the uploaded version is in 480p and blurry..making this request because this classic can be rewatched endlessly for all the sporting community

Perhaps the worst highlights I've ever seen in my life. The level of this match is one of the highest we've seen in the sport, but this video only shows the end of the sets, as if that was the only important thing in a tennis match. We don't even see one of the most extraordinary and iconic points of Nadal's career, the banana shot that gives him second set point. What a shame.

what a match!! Verdasco's level is his best ever but still it was impossible to beat Rafa. Very sad that Verdasco failed in the last game, just one game that he made a few mistakes and cost him to lose.

That 4th set tiebreak is fearless tennis from Verdasco. He's just completely dialled in, see ball, hit ball.
