Rafizi: Realistically Harapan should aim for 80 seats in GE15

A realistic benchmark for Pakatan Harapan in the next general election would be to win about 80 parliamentary seats, PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli said.
Rafizi, 44 - who is making a return to active politics - said Harapan needs to start doubling down on appealing to voters immediately in order to avoid massive casualties in the 15th general election (GE15).
He pointed to Harapan’s bad performance in the Johor snap polls and warned that the opposition coalition is in trouble as Johor is a “microcosm of Malaysia as a whole”.

The PRU 13 and 14 was the heydays of the opposition parties. At that time , the rakyat were giving the benefit of the doubt to the opposite . And the BN reputation was being successfully tarnished. For the incoming election, there is no longer benefits of the doubt. PH had proven themselves to be incompetent, abusive of power, liars, and love blaming. The elections result from late 2019 till today shows the rakyat are showing the door to PH.

Not necessary to analyze so much. Too many voters are just listening to rumors from uncles and aunties at pasar and kopitiam. They just enjoyed gossiping that way rather than thinking rationally with their brains. They might also be politically illiterate. Majority of voters for PH in the past might be due to the Bersih yellow wave only. Too many of them might be expecting "overnight miracle" in the country when PH was in office. They didn't bother about the financial status, time constraint, legal constraints and etc that PH government was dealing with. What they wanted was just a "miracle". Don't think too much like a strategist, instead think like a politically illiterate person dealing with the same.

Indeed, blame it mostly on the immature behavior of DAP's supporters. They harped on petty issues like black shoes, Islamic calligraphy when the focus should be on fulfilling the PH's election manifesto. Even their leaders kept silent to Mahathir's undoing after given the first-time Ministerial top posts. Post Sheraton move, the big mouth LGE kept bad mouthing PKR throughout the Malacca and Johore elections over a collective decision to disagree on certain issues. Not to mention aligning to MUDA instead of PKR per se. This self-destruct of the younger Lim was echoed by the party’s supporters in MKini calling for boycotting the state elections as form of protests against PKR. Such lame comrades for sure!

I have said the same thing to people on Twitter after the Johor Election result was announced. PH didn't lose their loyal voters despite losing seats. It's not the seat you won in GE-14 because people vote for PH but they're actually BN supporters who are sick of Najib and turn to support BERSATU. The split of voters wasn't on the PH side. They need another strategy to win the upcoming election. Maybe Rafizi has already thought about it.

Perhaps you are partly right. I reckon that PH won in last PRU due to swing of fence-sitters votes towards PH, not necessarily from BN voters boycotting Najib. In PRU14, PH-PPBM won the seat by 25,012 votes defeating BN (16,422). In the case of PRU13, the seat belonged to BN by 25,687 votes defeating PKR who earned 16,590 votes. It's over 9,000 majority differences swing to PH-PPBM in PRU14. While in the latest PRN shown BN failed to reclaim the numbers of voters they lose during PRU14 despite winning the seat. Where do those numbers go? Yes, it goes to PN-PPBM (9,875) yet the votes for PH are split between PKR (6,448) and MUDA (4948). If you said fence-sitters are supporting PH during PRU14, in this case, you're right coz the turnout percentage has shown the evidence.

This is a rational and realistic way of thinking that will serve Pakatan Harapan well. No delusions of winning and no delusions of Anwar being PM. They need to refocus on serving the rakyat and being an opposition that pushes the agenda back to the best interests of the rakyat. That should be the point anyway. Regardless of the motivations of PH politicians, they surely must realize the overall public sentiment that has swung in favour of Bossku and his henchmen. Besides, even though BN probably have slightly less than half of the popular vote, PH, Warisan, Muda, Pejuang , PAS and Bersatu will never form an alliance in time for PRU-15 as the bad blood between them is just too fresh and they are too unfocused in their collective energies, unlike PRU-14 where they were all focused on a common enemy.

just to add in simple words: BN must remove its Mahkamah Cluster ( v hard to swallow ), put younger faces with calibre and integerity ( have to find ) - the BN can woo the voters with not much effort.
