Hah! I gave him that tidbit in 1989 after a show in Portland. He got such a kick out of that, that he started using it and made shirts.

Dicks dad talked the owners of the closed Rendezvous ballroom in Newport Beach California into opening it up Friday and Saturday evenings so we teenagers would have a place to go and hang out. I think it was like 50 cents to get in and not much of a dress code. We would go and dance to The Beach Boys, Jan and dean, the righteous brothers and of course Dick and his band. It was a fabulous time for us. I came back from combat in Vietnam to find that it had burned to the ground while I was gone. So sad. There is a bronze plague on the sidewalk the commemorates “the site of the Rendezvous Ballroom”.

Read a lot about Dick Dale recently. Always thought this piece of music sounded Middle Eastern. Well, Dick was Lebanese & Polish. He learned to play Middle Eastern Instruments.

miserlou is really an old egyptian folk song, you can search "original miserlou" and you'll find it

Have you seen Paul David's vid, EPIC RIFFS | World's Most Iconic Riff - (I played it wrong) on KZbin? Even if you don't play the guitar it is definitely worth a look. Turns out it has this Middle Eastern percussive aspect to the guitaring and most people don't play it that way. This is why no one could really make it sound like Dick Dale.

Every live version of Misirlou I've heard is different, he liked to fuck about and have fun with it :) And this is my favourite so far.
