I have never even picked up a needle and thread in my entire life, but your instructions were so clear and motivating that I decided to give this quilt a try. After a 5 minute tutorial on how to stitch in a straight line on my friend's sewing machine, I completed an entire crib-size blanket in an afternoon (including breaks for tea and laughter). So simple and beautiful. I can wait to watch more videos and create even more. :)

I've found that the Schticky link rollers are wonderful for getting all the little threads and lint off the completed, washed and dried quilts. It's quick and easy!

Thanks to this tutorial video I undertook a matching set of flannel baby quilts for my soon-to-be twin Niece and Nephew. I haven't sewn like this in many years, and I'll admit that they were not my very best effort, but they are pretty nice! I'm proud to bring them to the upcoming baby shower to give to my sister-in-law and brother. Thanks for this video, I honestly wouldn't have had a clue without it!!

What a darling idea. Ive got a new great grandbaby coming and life is just too busy. This looks fast and its beautiful. Flannel is warm enough to not need batting for the summer too. And you could even stuff it when you have those areas open and run one simple stitich around the square after you have the squares together at that point. Opens up possibilities .

You give some great tips that are so obvious once you hear them but for inexperienced quilters like myself, are often overlooked. Thank you so much! I can't wait for my material and supplies to arrive so I can start for my little guy's quilt!

Thank you for this tutorial! I had been taught to sew an "X" through the center of my squares which worked out great when I used small 5" squares, but when I tried it using layer cake size pre-cut squares that I ran through with my Accu-Quilt "rag quilt" die (it snips all the edges for you as you die cut it) I didn't like the way it looked. This looks so much better. Now I have to figure out how far in to sew around the edges before I run the blocks through the Go machine. You've inspired me to take out my stash and get going on that project again, thank you so much! Its been so cold this winter and I've been huddling under this little flannel lap quilt! (We even use it in the summer, because it is so soft and amazingly the right weight for a summer night.)

You can use a white or solid color flannel for the inside in place of batting. This would mean that you need 3 layers for each square. It makes a really warm winter type quilt. I have made many of these for my 6 children and my parents for the cold winters in NE Ohio.

@MJWetmore Glad you are enjoying it and considering the project. I made one for my Mom and It is a great craft and makes a long lasting blanket. The rag quilt that I made I just sewed an X in the middle of the square “sandwich’ I did not sew around it. I think everyone puts their own little twist on the instructions - so if you are worried about it - just leave it out - it does not hurt the integrity of the blanket over all. Good luck and dive right in - the results are very satisfying.

Yes! Sew first, then wash your project. We don't normally put batting between the layers, but you could use a thin one like Warm and Natural, or another layer of flannel to make the quilt warmer if you'd like.

My daughter's God Mother made her one some years ago. She added batting and it came out beautiful and really warm. The more you wash it the more it fringes and looks great. She also had her name embrorded on it. Sad to say that she used it so much ,she wore it out. We have stored it an air tight bag for memories.

Hi Catherine, you can certainly try using the cotton remnants, but the quilt will need batting for warmth and heft. Try sewing a sample of maybe 4 squares together and washing to see if you get the result you want. Yes, the flannel that we used is a soft, brushed cotton.

Try sewing each row together from opposite directions. This keeps the quilt from curving. So the first rows, sew together from the left, the next from the right. It also helps to do this block by block as well. Sew the first two top to bottom, then the next one bottom to top. Hope this helps!

You could try it with other woven cotton fabric, but the flannel frays nicely on the edges.

You can add 3 layers. As im doing just that. Solid white flannel for the middle and cream for backing. I didnt think of the same fabric as front, but im going with 10 inch squares on all 3 cut outs and with 1 1/2 inch seam allowance to make the edges more poofy and frayed. The added flannel in the middle helps for thickness and of course sewing an x on each gives stability.
