Guruji taught this raga as Shuddh Vasant, otherwise known as Adi Vasant. There is an early recording by Birenda Kishore Roy Choudhury on Rudra Vina in which both shuddh and tivra MA occur. Aashish Khan has also performed it using both fourth degrees. Guruji acknowledged this use of both madhyams. He said he referenced the Karnataka approach to the raga in his interpretation, reasoning that the South Indian version must be the older variety. However, I am not aware of any textual evidence that might support this interpretation (which does not necessarily mean such evidence doesn't exist)..

Thank you for this amazing and pristine recording! WOW… Please note that Basant and Vasanta are two different ragas. As guruji said, this is Vasanta is a very ancient raga and the Basant is also for spring time I believe is more modern and actually more complex incorporating Shudh madyam and explores more of the upper range, therefore it’s an uttaranga raga as per my understanding. This is more serious raga in my opinion than Basant which is quite playful. If I am mistaken please correct me!

I wouldn't consider it uttaranga pradhan, as shuddh MA is so pronounced. Purvanga and uttaranga are relatively balanced in this raga. There is certainly a bit of focus on Dha, so an argument could be made that it is uttaranga pradhan. When Guruji taught this to me in 1992 he didn't say one way or the other, as far as I can recall. Shubhendra, Aditya, and Gaurav, the other students in the group at the time, might recall differently.
