In the book it was very different though, she was basically locked into a 2v1 the whole time. Here she could've left especially since Meleys is one of the fastest dragon known to live.

@@johnnyskinwalker4095 Seriously though, the bullshit of a scene in episode 9 that we got, was supposed to be THE SCENE of SUNFYRE THE GOLDEN, and it still irritates me, that was Aegon's moment riding him around the city and whst we got was Rhaenys genociding a bunch of smallfolk when she could of literally gotten away through one of the other entrances of the Dragonpit.

Losing Rhaenys and Meleys was utterly devastating. They were a true team and had been to battle before. Neither back down from a fight. The way they looked at each other as they both realized they were going to die was a true warrior’s exit. I don’t know if the future deaths are going to be as noble. RIP Rhaenys and the Red Queen

Meleys was actually able to bring Vhagar down -- if you paid attention. Vhagar only wins on surprise attacks (sucker punches or rather - sucker munches) . Because when Meleys and Vhagar were head to head Vhagar wasnt able to stop Meleys -- it was only when Meleys and Rhaenys weren't looking, is when Vhagar and Aemond try to attack

Everyone says this as some "got em" for team black but it just isn't reality. Gravity brought Vhagar to the ground. Meleys is much more agile and so was able to pull up but Meleys caused Vhagar no significant damage. Also intelligence is an important part of battle and Vhagar has shown herself to be the smartest dragon with the way she attacks. There are no rules in war and it is irrelevant whether you think it's a "sucker punch."

Meleys never stood a chance of beating Vhagar in a 1v1. So many people aren't understanding what happened in this fight. Meleys didn't knock vhagar down, it's actually the exact opposite. Vhagar was the one who brought the fight down to the ground As vhagar and meleys flew towards each other, Vhagar grabbed Meleys by the leg and broke it, then began dragging meleys down to the ground. Vhagar knew meleys wouldn't be able to take flight again with a broken leg, which would've made her a sitting duck. As they got closer to the ground Vhagar had to release meleys leg so she could start slowing her own descent rate, thus cushioning her landing. Meleys almost touched the ground, but she had just enough time/altitude to flap her wings to create lift and save herself from impact with the ground.

Rhaenys returned because regardless of the ambush, the order from her queen and the original intention was to secure rooks rest and stop criston cole's advance. she could've easily fled on several occasions but that would mean effectively giving up the crownlands and maybe the war at this point, so se took her chances and decided to fight. she already beat aegon and she saw how ruthless aemond was, so in a sense dhe was hoping she could end the whole war for rhaenyra here once and for all,. In a sense she knew the danger she was in so you could say she was effectively commiting suicide, but she also knew what fleeing would mean for rhaenyras war effort, so she stayed and fought... say what you wil about rhaenys but if she was the queen she seemed the kind to take on the battle herself rather than send people to do the fighting for her, something we see in rhaenyra too, which is why she stands by her

Rhaenys? The one that killed some hundreds commoners for nothing, could have ended the war and avoided thousands of deaths but again did nothing. And more, the one that advice Rhaenyra to ridiculously go chat with Alicent after everything that happened. Exposing Rhaenyra at such risk with no control of the situation at all, delivering herself to the enemy. Rhaenys is lost and indecisive, she cant decide if she wants to go to war or not, and commit to it. There was no need for her to sacrifice herself in this battle, she should have flown away to Dragonstone when Vhagar was down, or even better, after Vhagar burned Sunfire. Rhaenys should follow Daemon logical idea to team up

Rhaenys chose to stay because she saw and she knew she had the chance to injure Vhagar and somewhat incapacitate her and Aemond to fight in the future even at the expense of her and Meleys life.

Simple but effective. I actually cheered. He’s quick on his feet and brutal with a sword. I don’t really like Cole, but I understand him. And if I were in this universe I’d think twice before crossing swords with him.

Personally I find Aegon to be one of the most complex/interesting characters on HOTD and I've noticed a lot of people barely recognize it because they hate him so much. Which I find interesting, since it seems they hate him for either being Rhaenyra's enemy or because he's useless. I don't think many people hate him because he raped Dyana, otherwise they'd hate Daemon for killing Rhea. The difference is that Daemon is competent in battle and is saracastic, but Aegon's incompetence is a story in itself

Daemon had the correct strategy from the beginning. He had ordered Rhaenys to ride with him so both could attack Vhagar simultaneously because she was so big & killing Aemon at the same time. Rhaenys answer was no, he couldn't order her because he wasn't king. Big mistake.

Plus Viserys cant choose his heir as Westeros is a feudal monarchy where the tradition follows the firstborn son to be king, just like in real world history. That same law made him king over Rhaenys

37:02 and what is Daemon supposed to do there? Dreams are happening with or without those drinks, he is in Harrenal for a reason. Is he supposed to leave it for the Greens and not control the Riverlands? They need an army, and that is why he is there. Team Green already has an army, and Daemon needs one for Team Black. What is this thought process, what on earth is he supposed to do there? And Igli, he is the king consort. That is not him taking power, that is exactly who he is. What he said to Oscar Tully is true. A liege lord can't act weak and allow his vassal houses like Blackwoods and Brackens to do what they want. That is why he brought in The Blackwoods to assemble an army by bringing people to Team Black. Is that not what was supposed to be done? You do realize that Team Black has no army, right? Rhaenyra is currently doing nothing to get an army, that is why he has to. He is not a detriment, he is the most powerful weapon she has. The fear of him is the reason she married him.

So, Vhagar is known as the Queen of the Dragons. She's a female dragon of over 180 years old. I always see people saying "He is huge" and "There's no fighting against him" and assuming she's a male dragon, but she isn't and that's important for the story. Female dragons fiercely defend their riders, more than male dragons that usually just prefer attacking first with no care for the riders. Which makes Vhagar even more dangerous, because if Aemond is at risk, she won't spare anything to keep him safe.

I never realized how emotionally unprepared I was to see dragons kill each other. I feel like the dragons are a bit more domesticated in hotd versus got and it makes it significantly worse seeing their owners bond with them and then they get sent out to fight wars that aren't their own.

Meleys was the fastest dragon and has that strategy of attacking underneath to claw at the lungs/belly. Meleys was the one that grabbed Vaghar to then claw and pushed to the ground. If Rhaenys would have taken Daemon seriously before, his plan to team up against Vaghar would have worked.

Notice how Rhaenys never commanded Dracarys. She is no kinslayer. She just wants to injure the dragons a bit to not be sent to war again. Whilst Aemond now has 2 1/2 kills. He deserves to only be remembered as a Kinslayer. A disgrace to House Targaryen.

Rhaenys HAD to be the one to start it….she had pushed the blacks back so much they had to get some leveling ground. She was advising Rhaenyra I’m sure she felt some responsibility. But now BECAUSE of her death and the manner of it she has protected the Rook. This in turn will help to get their other allies and Daemon’s heads out of their asses.

It's wild seeing Daemon tripping balls at Harrenhal. He's probably having "Weirwood dreams" (as Jaime did in the books) as Harrenhal was built on a cut-down Weirwood forest, the roots of surviving Weirwoods appear to be working their way through the ruins, and as Alys said, he was sleeping on a bed made from a felled Weirwood. The drink Alys gave him probably adds to it, as he still seemed to be a bit out of it at the meeting at the table.

Nobody is innocent here, nor the blacks or the greens. They are both bad, if Rhaenyra wanted it, she could have bent the knee, passed the song of ice and fire prophecy to Alicent sons and go from there, nobody would have died. It felt like Ned's death in GoT, Rhaenys was my favorite character 😢💔 And that look (with that little smile) she gave Meleys before she gave it the order to attack, looked just like the one my mom gave me a few days before she passed. She knew she was going to die. It's more of a 'I'm ready to go now' kinda look, 'ready to rest'. Even the dragon was tired. Great actress, great character! RIP, my queen 👑🐲🔥

Maybe Rhaenys is looking for a good husband for her grand-daughter Rhaena, since Luke is dead and Baela is betrothed to Jace and Joffrey is a bit young for Rhaena, and that's why she's checking out Alyn of Hull. A son of Corlys, if legitimated, could become his heir and Rhaena could become Lady of Driftmark as per their original plan.

I can't forgive the show for erasing Elmo and Kermit Tully, the show was cowardly for not being willing to follow through on Muppet Tully power, but here's hoping the now introduced Oscar Tully will actually get to be the badass he is in the books. Now Aemond saying F U to Aegon at Rook's Rest was a nice bit of addition/nuance to the book events, that was brilliant.

Also there is no Kermit in the show, they have clearly consolidated Kermit and Oscar into the show’s version of Oscar Tully to avoid using the most recognizable Muppet names. You’ll note that Oscar is said to be the heir, when in the books Kermit is the actual heir, so there is no Kermit Tully in the show.

I think she knew she was on a kamikaze mission. She was the one til now saying never send in the dragons because it’s a nuclear option. She decided that’s the only option left and took it upon herself to do this showing Rhaenyra this is what they have to do. I love the exchanged look of Meleys and her knowing it was the end and thanks for all the memories type of look. I guess Aegon shouldn’t have humiliated Aemond last episode. I feel that he’s still alive but in bad shape because they would’ve shown him dead. Sad to see her and her dragon go. It was truly heartbreaking

I was literally hyperventilating watching this entire episode. Aegon never put in enough effort to learn his mother tounge or to improve his combat skills or understanding politics like Aemond did. The show could go up to 4 seasons if done correctly

Meleys was too injured to have made it very far & Rhaenys would have never abandoned Meleys even for the sake of her own safety. That last look they gave before turning back to fight Vhaegar again was a mutual acknowledgement they were gonna go down together. Makes that whole moment that much more heartbreaking

I can assure you that vhagar is tired and done fighting, i could see it in this episode ... She is just protecting her rider but the next time she faces another dragon, i'm sure she won't win. And my heart shatters for rhaenys,really. that was the person who should have been the queen long time ago and were treated poorely and died fighting for another queen. Poor sunfyre too , FYI he is the most beautiful dragon

daemon said to the old queen we can take out vhagar together. old queen had the biggest dragon for team black and daemons is slightly smaller. both battle tested. Also vhagar and myleys both belonged to a married couple previously so they were togther often, so it sucks they had to kill each other.

This couldn’t be avoided. Otto set this up the minute Aemma and Baelon died, and he successfully sent Daemon away from Viserys, leaving him to be manipulated. Also, remember it was Otto who suggested Rhaenyra to be named heir, because he was already planning on having Alicent as the next queen, so he could have an Oldtown Andal puppet on the throne. Alicent herself made treasonous moves all her life the minute she put on that green dress. Way before a Viserys mumbled a name while drugged off his mind and about to die, in the same day he rose from his deathbed to defend the claim of his heir against his Hand and Vaemond, in front of the entire court. So no one buys he changed his mind and it would have happened even if he died saying: Rhaenyra is to be Queen. Alicent pretends because she needs to justify it to herself. Now Rhaenyra threw the truth in her face and she moved past it. They just didn’t think Aegon would try to be king instead of letting them rule for him.

I assume they changed her hair color because they wanted to make the bastardy rumors more than they were. And they also must think the audience is slow and can’t understand a brunette can be a Targaryen which is stupid, bc Jon Snow and also there’s a few none silver-haired Targaryens, such as Queen Alysanne and Daemon and Viserys’ mother, Alyssa, who had darker blond hair, the Velaryon boys, then a few others down the line, including one that will be in the new series, Baelor Breakspear, who inherited the hair of his Martell mother. Also, it’s never said in the book if Aemma had silver hair or if she could perhaps have inherited her Arryn father’s looks.
