I don’t think I ever appreciated how mind blowing this sequence is. The jagged movement, the soft coloring, it’s like everybody on screen is a ghost. They’re all at their happiest and you can already tell it won’t last for long. Devastating.

I remember seeing this fit the first time about 25 years ago. I was only four or five and I woke up one night and my father, who always slept in the living room, was there, sleeping with the TV on. so I just laid there next to him and saw this footage... one of the best memories of my childhood...

Lillo - Such a beautiful comment. In Bensonhurst, during the late 1950's as a ten year old, my father would permit me to stay up late and watch the Friday night fights. While my mother and sisters slept, we'd sit together in the darkened living room watching the B&W tv while the smoke from his cigarette curled overhead. I like the use of color in this scene, when you think of it this is pretty much the only scene in the film in color. The color can almost be seen as happiness, it's safe to assume everyone is quite happy in these moments and the black and white stills of him boxing are full of rage and violence much like the rest of his life. (Little extra) the use of home video style also helps with making the viewer film more intimate with the characters as if they're close friends with them and they're enjoying this moment along with them.

Nick Arriaga which is interesting because Scorsese’s intention was for the home movies to denote to us that his life was crumbling despite the family, despite the memories. His idea was that we’d see the growing disillusionment of those around him in the home videos.

This scene was actually filmed by amateur camera men. Martin Scorcese decided to do this to give this scene the specific "home video" feel to it. It was also filmed with actual color cameras that were popular, albeit expensive, in the late 1940's.

Notice how after Vicky jokingly pushes Jake in the water, Jake can't just leave it alone? Nope, he has to go and forcibly grab her and throw her in too. I find that telling about his character. Can't let a woman get away with making him look foolish. Guy was supremely insecure in his manhood. He let on to that early on when he complained to Joey he had "little girl's hands."

It's only now that I'm looking at this clip that I realise the significance of this scene. It's the only part of the movie shot with colour, which represents the only moments of true happiness within the relationship. Then it switches to the black and white of De Niro fighting, which represents the animal underneath; indeed, the rage of the bull to come. Martin Scorsese is a fuckin' poetic mastermind!

With some movies that use the grain filter, like Grindhouse for example, it's usually done digitally and it often looks unconvincing. Martin Scorsese literally took the footage and scratched it with a coat hanger to make it more authentic and old-looking.

This scene has the best song in the film, and one of the best songs in any film. Many other directors would serve these kinds of scenes as filler. Not Scorsese. Every single thing in his classics has purpose. I love this scene, its unique song and how it's in colour. It's as if to say THIS was when he was on top of his game, but he always wanted more. "I was blind but now I can see".

Scorsese is a genius. This scene remembers me the scene on Citizen Kane, where Orson Welles tells us the story of the couple during 20 years. Scorsese did it but on 2 years. It shows the most important stuff for Jack ( his brother, his wife, and furthermore boxe.) Brilliant idee of the old screen and the photo (which shows that all Jack's past is ephemer. Nice scene because of his simple history, beautiful music. Both side of Jack: his happiness a 1:17, and his rage at 1:20 Sorry for my english
