Its important to know that ragnar in the end did not have any faith in the gods. He wanted to tell that, from the last scenes with ecbert and when he tells that he can relate to athelstan but in an opposite way beacuse athlestan didnt know which God to consider while ragnar was troubled if the Gods existed. You decide your own fate, as much as you would like it to be decided by someone else. Its you who will bear fruit for his actions, in the end there is only one order that exists in this world that is karma, you do good you get good. If you read more about ragnar maybe everyone will know what kind of life we should live now.
