I have the same Bosch sander. There are two threaded holes on the top (yours are clogged with sawdust so you may not have noticed them!) so you could have just bolted through the back of the jig and maybe not needed the clamps.

Nice solution there bud. I see now why you were following my sander exploits. 😂 For that bosch sander ( and the blue version) there is actually a bench mount and angle fence/table available for it - just so folk know like. Another good thing about these Bosch ones is there's also a sanding frame for it (keeps it flat on large surfaces). They're more than the sander costs mind. All adds up to making it a decent versatile bit of kit.👍

I've been wanting to do something like this for years with my belt sander.... the only thing I use it for nowadays is to sand the dinging room table once every 6-7 years, so I can't permanently build it into a jig, but it would get so much more use mounted with a table. Never thought to use toggle clamps. Will give this a go thanks!

You have to but tons of IEC connectors (the compute PSU ones) an shorten the cables of your tools. It changed my life. I saw Mr.Hornberger do it with fancy ones but is really expensive, IEC works beautifully and cheap. Even better is that some powertools have really good cables, those are the one you buchit to make your extenders.

"Even better is that some powertools have really good cables, those are the one you buchit to make your extenders." You have to be VERY careful about this as often power tools are double insulated so their cables do not have an earth. This means you end up with an extension that, if used in some circumstances, will mean the end device is not earthed

When I purchased my Elu belt sander (some 30 years ago) it came with a fairly substantial aluminium box which allows me to do what your box achieves. It even comes with an adjustable longitudinal bracket which provides the ability to sand at 90 or 45 degrees. It still works today.😀

Good plan if you have a belt sander and want to use it freehand or stationery. Little tip for when you need the adjustment you showed using washers. Epoxy putty is great for this application, simply protect the toolside with cling film and the putty will happily mould itself around any irregular shape and bond to most materials.

@RagnBoneBrown have you considered making the disk sander as an add on to your lathe? You can buy prebuilt sanding plates to go onto some chuck jaws, or a piece of 18mm ply, with some velcro for a 305mm (or smaller) sanding disk, and a faceplate ring will do just the job. Great video as always

Nice to see the focus not on "more tools = better" I like projects like this - and have also gotten rid of lesser used tools, and finding ways of making the ones I do have work better for me. A lathe can make a good disc sander in a pinch!

I was considering doing something like this, but I went the disc sander route using my lathe in the end - I mounted a circle of MDF onto a lathe backplate and stuck a 305mm sanding disc to it. Works great, although the angle's a bit awkward and I need to do a better job of the table.

The Bosch one is great, I don’t have a thicknesser so it’s essential for using pallets for me. Belt sander with a rubber stick is a killer combo. Got me out of so many difficult builds where a plane was overkill but an orbital was just not enough.

Thanks Keith, it's always interesting to see how your workshop evolves, regardless of fashion it's important to keep in mind just how you work and use equipment ! That looks a great solution and if it works for you then it's right, keeping it simple is a good strategy and we like your style, no need to compete with other makers even if we enjoy them for other reasons ! I remember when you only had the Bosch, it's served you well ! I have five belt sanders and none of them are cordless, I guess I need another ! 😉

Great project, I should do something more permanent with mine, I always bodge some crude set up when I need to use mine like this. Could you have swapped the toggle clamp bodies and hooks around? So you have just 2 clamp bodies on the sander part, then 4 hooks on the fence? If that makes sense? May just tidy it up a little not have 2 clamps swinging around. 👍

Would you believe I bought the exact same miniature toggle clamps from Amazon as well as few weeks ago. If you still want a disc sander then why not make one for your lathe? That what I did, just made a 8" circular bit of wood with a bit out of the back to go into a four jaw chuck. Bit of velco on the front to hold. I bought a support that replaces the tool rest but you could easily make something that sat on the lathe bed.
