This is very useful! I really appreciate those rules of thumb, as I'm always insecure about which notes to play as bass/chords Thanks a lot! :)

But always thought ragtime was slow, like in the Entertainer, not as as fast as you play
@PianoWithJonny
@PianoWithJonny 3 жыл бұрын
It is usually played at a slower tempo. I just personally enjoy playing it faster! 😀

In my understanding people spend years to get to this level of ragtime freedom in the left hand.

I have a slight problem. I can barely reach 1 octave from finger 1 to 5 on my right hand. This makes doing the forward rag roll somewhat difficult. It’s a little easier to reach an octave on my left hand, maybe because i’m left handed. Is there any way I can get around this? Stretching maybe?
@TheDevlain
@TheDevlain 4 жыл бұрын
If that is the case maybe you should use 5ths until you get enough skills with your right hand. I think that the 8th could be reached naturally after playing for a good time. But since you posted this 5 months ago, maybe by now you can stretch your right hand naturally

Gonzalo Diaz Ailan A little closer. I don’t really play, but I play on and off, and I have noticed it’s a little easier, and the forward rag roll is definitely easier, I just had to get the motion of it down.

This isn’t classic ragtime. This is just a Johnny version of ragtime. This really isn’t what ragtime back then was built off of.
@aaronrobinson9386
@aaronrobinson9386 3 жыл бұрын
Well if by classic ragtime you mean Joplin, even just look at something like Original Rags (Joplin's First Rag Published) or Maple Leaf Rag and you see a lot of those Rag Rolls. Again with stride. But it wasn't just entirely rag rolls. Most of it had an actual melody. Listen to something like Solace from Joplin and it doesn't seem really like ragtime but in all actuality, it is. Classic ragtime is really just dance music which can come in waltzes, marches, two steps, sometimes one steps, etc. Not just oversimplified rag rolls.
@sirpizza2044
@sirpizza2044 3 жыл бұрын
@@aaronrobinson9386 still has absolutely nothing too do with Johnny's version of ragtime. if you have watched any of his other videos where he switches stuff to ragtime he uses the same exact preset with the left hand going super fast and the right hand playing the SAME EXACT melody for each of the like 20 videos hes put out. that's not ragtime. he litteraly never changes it.
@aaronrobinson9386
@aaronrobinson9386 3 жыл бұрын
@@sirpizza2044 Thats mostly what I was trying to get at. I meant there are some elements in Johnny's playing, like the stride and the rolls, but that its only a small portion of what ragtime really is.
@aaronrobinson9386
@aaronrobinson9386 3 жыл бұрын
Because in the first strain of Original Rags thats pretty much just rag rolls and stride but after the first strain it changes it up

Why so short-sighted? He's teaching it so you can apply it to every song you want, not just marry has a little lamb. If you are satisfied with marry has a little lamb alone then maybe you should look somewhere else lol

@@abdc-yk4ey true, but the course is quite simple so i'm not sure it's useful to take so long to explain it. i'm quite upset because almost all courses on internet are mainly mumbo jumbo. i could indeed watch someone elses course, but it's hard to find a concise one. cheers
