Correction @ 37:24 - top level improvement: there is a 10 thaller surcharge per neighboring improvement not yet at level 3. This means a total of a 20 thaller surcharge if neither neighbor has been improved to level 3. Section 1.3.E (v2.2) states, "In addition to the previous level of its own area, Improvements of level II and III are also based on the previous level of an overlapping neighbored Improvement area; similarly, improvements of level IV are based on the previous level of both of its neighboring Improvement areas." Later, it states, "The cost to develop a new Improvement of level II, III and IV is increased by 2, 5 and 10 Thalers, respectively, for each of those lower-level neighboring improvements that you have not yet developed." For level 4, there are two neighbors which need development, as mentioned in the video. The surcharge applies to both. I've confirmed this with Arne on the BGG forums.

I very rarely comment on videos, but this one deserves more praise. Brilliant production and an excellent breakdown of the (sadly often badly worded) rules. Of course, Era of Tribes is an excellent game as well.

Great summary Ryan. We really enjoy this game but will often get tripped up by some of the Byzantine rules, so this is super helpful. Any chance this is a preface to an upcoming playthrough / run through???

Barbarians flip over and their bonus is used after a battle, they are not exhausted. They are discarded in the event if a draw however - and I assume - in the event of a loss also (although I found nothing that specified what to do with them when losing, we chose to house rule to discard them as it makes thematic sense).

This is incorrect. Check the bottom of page 15: "Once a barbarian has been used (as a bonus or mercenary) he is placed face-up and can't be used anymore, except for the influence card 'Liberators.'" So if you use a barbarian in battle, you don't also get the bonus - you get EITHER the bonus, or you get to use the barbarian as a unit in a battle, but not both. And by "exhausted," i mean that once a barbarian is flipped over - whether by using its bonus or after deploying it in a battle - it can't be used for the rest of the game... not for its bonus, and not in any other battle. Section 5 goes into more detail about barbarians. i don't have an official ruling on a barbarian draw, but in lieu of help from Arne, i think you're right - the province would stay empty, since it was a mutual defeat.

So during attack, the attackers and defenders leave the map and go on that little combat board. Is there a practical way to remember where your vassals/cities go again once combat is over, other than putting a bit of cracker or a ball of fluff on the map to mark it?

i wondered the same thing when i was learning the game, but in practice, you're only ever resolving the battles one by one - never more than a single province at a time. It's not tough to remember which province you're resolving. And it's always at least two humans at the table who have to remember, even when you're battling barbarians... so between the two of you, if neither remembers, you can use the bits of cracker and balls of fluff that are filling the space where your brains should be to mark the spot. ;)

I like to use the back of a foodmarker (normally they are "hunger, but as they are red, they really point out). But as Ryan said...there is just one battle at a time, so it is easy to remember where it took place. ...maybe use the hungermarker in naval battles ;-)

I don't tend to back games such as yours on kickstarter but I could tell that your game was something special.
