Cool seeing Elder Sign here in 2017. Even after years, it' my absolute favourite. It might not be the best game, I just really like it - the theme, simple one-use items, custom dice decisions you ahve to make. And it can be infinitely moddified, if someone finds it too easy or hard. With all the fancy new games flooding us, is great to see appreciation for the Old Ones.

This is my favorite board game of all time. I would highly suggest and recommend getting the Unseen Forces Expansion if you haven't already. It adds nearly double the Adventure Cards, plus the Blessed/Cursed mechanic with matching dice, and the Entrance Sheet is changed to four Entrance Cards that make the game more engaging and fluid. It also takes away the ability to buy Elder Signs, which to me, makes the game WAY too easy. The Grave Consequences Expansion is also a nice little addition that adds more flare and unique concepts to the game, like Phobias and the Epic Battle Deck.

As a counterweight opinion, I hate this game. Too random and punishing (punishing wouldn’t be a problem if it wasn’t so random and time constrained)

I love Elder Sign! I've got all the expansions for it! Pete is my absolute favorite. I don't know why, but he always seems to do well. His dice are just always on fire. I remember once we had a Medusa Exhibit in play, which is extremely difficult to get through, and we had already failed it several times. Pete walked in and proceeded to bonk everything into submission with his guitar with no help from items or clues.

We usually focus by putting the die on the small investigator chit on the adventure card. Also, it's kinda weird to watch this game without the Unseen Forces expansion. I see UF as basically "the rest of the game they forgot to put in the package". :)

Im confused on a particular task. So this card it's the aid card and it shows 3 magnifying glass, then 6, then 9. I only have 6 dice. And hacent unlocked other dice other than a red (I'm using unseen forcess expansion) my question is. 1. i managed to actually roll 3 magnifying glass on the first roll. What am I suppoed to do after that? Do i take the rolls I just did and it back to my dice pool? Cause how do you complete 6 die with fewer? This card is kinda confusing me 😂

Two questions (just tried to figure out the game yesterday). According to the rules you can "choose to fail" a card before your tasks are over, it gave me reason to wander if this means we can quit a card at the end of our turn and return to the entrance. Would I be incorrect? The rule book doesn't appear to say what happens to the card if you fail (I also have trouble with instructional written manuals) Also, I see Rahdo using Jenny's "Wither" Peril. Makes me wander, does Jenny get a choice or could Rahdo take from any other player because they're obligated due to the "co-op"? What if Jenny had intended it for the "Other World" card? I'm a BG newbie teaching other BG newbies how to play so I gotta get it right.
@rahdo6 жыл бұрын
if you fail out, the card remains and so do you. the rules say "When a player fails an Adventure card, he suffers the card’s penalties (see “Rewards and Penalties” on the next page for more details) and removes all dice from the card except those that are on a locked die icon. The player then proceeds to the Advance the Clock step of his turn"

"A game of Suspense and Supernatural Investigation." They forgot to add "crazy amount of RNG which ruins your games half the time." That being said, I have the Core game in android, and although I doubt I will get the expansions, I don't regret it. If you don't take it too seriously, it's a decent time killer for when you are traveling.

I just watched the Gates of Arkham expansion video from Rahdo and it looks like a big improvement. Unfortunately, I only own the digital (android) version and I doubt this will make it there. If it does, I'll get it. About the physical game, I don't doubt that some expansions make it a better game, but I am also not willing to spend 50-60 euro on expansions that fix the core gameplay of a filler game like ES. I'd rather get the Arkham Horror LCG that came out recently which I played on a friend's house and enjoyed it a lot.

26:49 No, Richard. That is not correct. What you just said is known as the “Gambler’s Fallacy”. Unfortunately, the die has no “memory”.
@rahdo5 жыл бұрын
so you're saying that one can't judge probabilities on a wider context like "on average, 50% of 1000 coinflips should come up tails, so expect roughly 500 tail results"?
@JJ_TheGreat5 жыл бұрын
@@rahdo I never said that one cannot judge probabilities on a wider scale. However, that wider scale encompasses a larger and larger sample size. In this runthrough, you definitely do not have a large enough dice roll sample. In addition, things change in this particular example because each "experiment" you are doing with rolling the dice is different since you are removing a die each time you fail. It has to be the SAME repeated experiment. You can find more information and examples about the gambler's fallacy at: psychologenie.com/gamblers-fallacy-definition-examples - which is where I found the following paragraphs which I am quoting. "It arises due to the belief that past independent events influence future outcomes, and originates from the erroneous belief that a small sample is an accurate representation of a larger sample/population. This implies that the probability of an outcome would be the same in a small and large sample, hence, any deviation from the probability will be promptly corrected within that sample size. However, it is mathematically and logically impossible for a small sample to show the same characteristics of probability as a large sample size, and therefore, causes the generation of a fallacy." "This can be explained by the simple example of a coin toss. If a plain and unbiased coin is taken and flipped, each time it is flipped, there is a 50% chance of it being either heads or tails. But this leads us to assume that if the coin were flipped or tossed 10 times, it would obey the law of averages, and produce an equal ratio of heads and tails, almost as if the coin were sentient. However, what is actually observed is that, there is an unequal ratio of heads and tails. Now, if one were to flip the same coin 4,000 or 40,000 times, the ratio of heads and tails would seem equal with minor deviations. The more number of coin flips one does, the closer the ratio reaches to equality. Hence, in a large sample size, the coin shows a ratio of heads and tails in accordance to its actual probability. If one selects a small sample within this population, one may observe long continuous occurrences of heads or tails, but basing ones judgments on such subjective data leads to the formation of the fallacy/mistaken belief. This is because, despite the short-term repetition of the outcome, it does not influence future outcomes, and the probability of the outcome is independent of all the previous instances. In other words, if the coin is flipped 5 times, and all 5 times it shows heads, then if one were to assume that the sixth toss would yield a tails, one would be guilty of a fallacy." "Gambler's fallacy, also known as the fallacy of maturing chances, or the Monte Carlo fallacy, is a variation of the law of averages, where one makes the false assumption that if a certain event/effect occurs repeatedly, the opposite is bound to occur soon." "It is a mistaken belief that if one experiences a continuous series of events, the opposite of such a series is soon to occur, i.e., if one is doing well, that luck is sure to run out soon, thereby bringing about a period of bad luck or failure. This fallacy is based on the law of averages, in the way that when a certain event occurs repeatedly, an imbalance of that event is produced, and this leads us to conclude logically that events of the opposite nature must soon occur in order to restore balance. Such a fallacy is mostly observed in a casino setting, where people gamble based on their perception of chance, luck, and probability, and hence, it is called gambler's fallacy." Also, keep in mind that you could just as easily reason that because you have flipped 5 heads in a row, that you are likely to continue flipping a 6th head in a row since getting heads has been the most recent result for a long time. This rationale is flawed by the same reasoning.
@JJ_TheGreat5 жыл бұрын
Also, keep in mind that there is a difference between Independent Events, such as each roll of a die - in which the probability (of rolling a 6, for example) on one roll of the dice DOES NOT AFFECT the probability (of rolling a 6) on any further roll. Contrast this with Dependent Events, such as when you look at the probability of drawing a red suited card from a deck of 52 cards. After the 1st draw, DEPENDING ON WHICH CARD YOU DRAW, affects the future probabilities of drawing a red suited card on future (2nd, 3rd, etc.) draws - because if the first card drawn is a red suit, then there will be LESS red suited cards left in the deck; whereas if it is NOT a red card, there would still be the maximum amount of red cards left in the deck. Also, regardless of the result of the first draw, the probability for the 2nd card drawn will change since you have a limited set of 52 cards. After drawing 1, you now have 51 cards remaining in the deck, etc. In this case, yes, your above logic makes sense. However, this is different from dice where each roll is independent of each other. I just wanted to make you aware of some probability concepts - which I think you will find interesting. I hope you can use this information at some point while filming a game (whether it involves press-your-luck or some other type of choices involving randomness) :-)

rahdo In the video starting @ 24:00, you started rolling 7 dice. Explained around 25:30, if you complete a line on the card you are going for, you are safe and you do not need to discard a die. However, each time you do not roll what you need, you MUST discard/throw a die out and then you re-roll the remaining dice - therefore depending on how successful/not successful you are, you could be discarding a bunch of dice. I am glad I could help! At one point, I had studied for the actuarial exams, but the math can become very advanced, especially when you are dealing with continuous probability, which involves calculus. Game probabilities - such as those involving dice and cards, which I was just explaining is discrete probability - which involves a set of countable values (as opposed to continuous probability - which involves an infinite number of values - which is why it involves calculus).
