Under his carefree persona, Katybon was a musical genius, a diamond in the rough who didn’t wait for anyone to polish him. He surrounded himself with musicians and other rappers with the same vision who made it their life mission to change the traditional rap sound in Tunis, thus creating DEBO, a safe haven to anyone who was crazy enough to go against the current, like Vipa, Massi, Tiga, Paza, Madou MC, etc. And when the world needed him the most, he disappeared like Aang the last Airbender, leaving us with hits like “Eb7ath 3anni” and “Ymanny Manny”. Moving forward to 2017, he surprises fans by coming back à la J. Cole with no promotion whatsoever. Going under the alias KTYB, he dropped his standout single “About” telling us that he is back, stronger than ever. I like to believe that his disappearance had something to do with creative journey. He was back, but definitely different. His self-discovery journey à la Eat, Pray, Love shaped the artist that he is today. You see KTYB is not just a rapper, he is a persona. A comedian in the streets and one of the best Tunisian rappers between the sheets. Always surrounded by likely-minded creators, he enlists the help of Stxev Abidov and Feddini, two young Tunisian producers who mastered the art of sampling, for tracks like “Jiboo (Je ne pleurais pas)” and “Fren$h Big Ol’ Fries”. Now exclusively working with the marvellous Feddini, no one is safe from this winning duo, from Abdul Majid Abdallah to Carole Samaha. They took the art of sampling and hiphop to another level. Mixtape, Vol. 2, dropped July, 2020, enforces the fact that KTYB is a force to be reckoned with, only two songs that don’t fit his now famous recipe : “White Sugar” co-produced by Feddini & Spicy Scoop while “Tournevis” was fully produced by the latter. KTYB is, for lack of better words, a pioneer. He revolutionised rap, not by trying to be different and coming up with complex rhyming schemes, but by staying true to himself and his art. Like he said in his track “FOREVER”, KTYB pulled up on us, Fallegui style.
