Honestly after rewatching the matches I think he played a nice 2010 World Cup. On the face of it you see zero goals and think he underperformed (and in that sense you’d have to say he did) but everything else that’s amazing about his game is present. Nearly every touch he makes is dangerous, dribbling is fantastic and his link up with others is as good as you’d expect at international level. The ball sticks to his feet whenever he receives it, it’s great to watch. The commentators even mention ‘how many times has he been denied by flying goalkeepers and the woodwork at this world cup’. I think it’s a shame it was viewed wholly as a poor tournament because I don’t think it was.

@@harry8601 you’re suggesting that a player can’t play well without scoring a goal? Or that they can’t have played well and lost the game? I think this is too linear and a very basic way of judging a football match. It’s 90 minutes long. The aim of attackers isn’t just simply ‘score a goal’ - that’s the last part. The ball needs to be in the best areas first. So having someone who run with it an attack the space / change direction quickly and open up new lanes of attack / find a pass through a very small window of space … is invaluable. Having near perfect ball retention so that they can do this a dozen times each match means the opposition team and specifically defence is always occupied which over the 90 minutes often results in a lapse of concentration or plain tiredness from constantly dealing with danger. Goals can come from other ways of course, but the best players normally are the ones who can do things that the majority can’t, and the absolute best like Messi does these things regularly with minimal fuss. This is why I suggested that he played well at the World Cup. Was it ultimately disappointing? Yes. Was it bad? Absolutely not.
