This is actually a war song and she is trying to depict how things were back in a days like hundred years ago when the men went to war and the women doing both role keeping together the family and every thing. Referring to the fact that Ethiopia has never been colonized but the music is just much deeper than that.

Understanding the story behind the music is bigger challenge. Just for hint : When Italy invaded Ethiopia this is how people of Ethiopia had to be. Women preparing meal for the man to take as he goes to war. That is why the hole town looks sad. All the fathers have to go to defend them.
