I fully agree with you. Additionally, Mrs G took full advantage of the the borrowed or fake surname "Gandhi" instead of "Ghandy" when Gandhian philosophy was still fresh in the minds of people. Moreover, there was no real competition for Congress then. Today's situation is quite different. RG is trying to divide the majority on caste lines but the entire people are now aspirational and they do not bind themselves to caste and work hard to grow from their present level. In terms of capability an ordinary person far more intelligent and hard working as well as they are well informed. Much as I respect Mr Gupta for his analysis and the brand of journalism he stands for, this episode appears like a confabulated fantasy of a man whose imagination has run riot. Comparing the congress of 1969 with that of today is like comparing chalk and cheese. One, in its time was the pre- eminent party in a unipolar political world and the struggle in it was for personal identity, whereas the present congress is a spent force looking for an identity, it’s 20% scattered vote bank being often brandished as its relevance in national polity. I would describe the present machinations in the party as an inept leader performing the last rites of a legacy he inherited, unable to become relevant in the political onslaught by Modi and team. A better caption of the episode could have been ‘ Is Rahul presiding over the dismantling of the idea called congress’. All that notwithstanding, I admire you for your journalism and am becoming a paid subscriber very soon.

If they didn't do it at that time India would have faced a dire challenges in importing oil and other important things. We hardly had any oil to keep our transport going. They didn't do it because they wanted to reform economy but they didn't see any other possible alternative.

There is a difference between Mohan Kumaramangalam and Kanhaiya Kumar. Mohan Kumaramangalam was a member of the CPI for a long period of time. He was an eminent lawyer and had to go underground when the CPI was banned, in the late 1940s. In fact, he came out with the Kumaramangalam Thesis, while he was in the CPI. I suggest you find out what this thesis is! Mohan Kumaramangalam's father Dr. Subarayan was the Home Minister (he was in the Congress) when his son was underground! His brother was Senior Officer, in the Armed Forces and retired as Chief of Army Staff, in the 1960s. Mohan Kumaramangalam's sister Parvathi Krishnan was a CPI MP, in the 1960s and early 1970s. This shows that there was some integrity in the system in those days. His son joined the BJP after finding that he was going nowhere in the Congress and this trend has been more pronounced today, when a stream of people is slowly turning into a flood! Kanhaiya has neither the intellect nor the commitment of a Mohan Kumaramangalam. Kanhaiya Kumar had just joined or about to join the National Council of the CPI when he jumped ship! I cannot see a future for him in the Congress, if he continues to behave in such a manner. It was one thing for Mrs. Gandhi sought the assistance of the CPI and the Left to remain in Power and play her games with the CPI and masquerade as a Leftist when it suited her, against the Congress party bosses. Rahul Gandhi has neither the intellect, the ability nor the political common sense to use this clown Kanhaiya, whose three claims to fame are that he was a student leader at JNU, that he went to jail and was defeated in the elections when he stood as a CPI candidate in Bihar. This was insightful, in that many of us would not have read that Rahul wants a split. A split where he is the unchallenged leader. He believes that he will carry the entire 20% of the guaranteed vote of the Lok Sabha Elections. Maybe he is right. On the surface level, this looks like an over-analysis - straining hard to look for patterns, where there are none. The important consideration missed out is that Rahul Gandhi has resigned from the presidentship of the party and there is no clear consensus candidature for this post, hence I don't see any split or factions rather confusion and quabbles
