Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. I'm the type of person who trys to make games have a little bit of realism so I played on revengeance mode because that's how it would be in reality one hit and you're dead, not to mention that you won't have self repair units. Plus in one of the Codec the doctor says that just because you're a cyborg it does not automatically give you the ability to pull off all those moves. @RARAYAYA RAA I think armstrong is diffrent cuz he was simply nieve. In his vision everybody is perfectly honorable and strives for honest improvment when in reality a lot of people are trecherous shits like raiden. Its quite intelligent writing if you ask me. You can see that when he bests raiden he picks him up only to be attacked by someone he though he made peace with. He compliments his rise from poverty when In reality he probably stabbed a lot of people in the back to get in front of the senitor from his birth, whom foolishly thinks he got there by the sweat of his brow. Armstrong only mistake was overestimating humans cuz quite frankly if everyone was like him in that regrard the world would easily function within his ideals with minimal problems but at the end of the day 80% of us are just arrogant animals that talk and refuse to truly think.

Now, for those who don’t quite understand, let me explain: Armstrong wishes to end war as a business and create a Social Darwinist utopia, where all the citizens of America fight their own battles and the strong survive while the weak perish. From a certain point of view, his arguments actually do make sense, and considering America, and by extension the world, were until recently controlled by the whims of the Patriot AI, it’s not hard to see where he’s coming from. For what it’s worth, he very much despises the Patriots; in fact, Armstrong is ideologically quite similar to fellow Patriot-hating politician George Sears, AKA Solidus Snake, who coincidentally Raiden also fought. Hell, much like Solidus, Armstrong also has some connection to the creation of child soldiers. Of course, it needs to be noted that while Armstrong definitely makes a good case, he is also a bonafide anti-villain. For those who need clarification, TVTropes describes an anti-villain as “a character with heroic goals, personality traits, and/or virtues who is ultimately villainous. Their desired ends are mostly good, but their means of getting there are evil. Alternatively, their desired ends are evil, but on a personal level they are far more ethical or moral than most villains and they thus use fairly benign means to achieve it, and can be heroic on occasion. They could also be someone or something whose desired ends or means are not necessarily ‘evil’ at all, but their actions simply conflict with that of whoever seems to be the protagonist.” While he does have good intentions and seems to genuinely want to better his country, the fact he resorts to terrorist actions, child soldiers, and ridiculous levels of violence makes him clearly the bad guy. At the end of the day, good intentions just don’t justify bad methods.

Armstrong actually isn't very good at persuading people. Like he said himself, "I don't write my own speeches". In the Sam DLC he just assumed that Sam would go along with him - reaching out his hand which Sam can't shake back because his has just been smashed - and barrelled on without consideration. He doesn't sell the principles, he just dominates and intimidates weaker-willed people through sheer force of personality. Armstrong just seems so inordinately, childishly delighted that someone actually agreed with him for once and he didn't have to batter something into shape like so many other times - dusting Raiden down, the eager grin, the quick energetic nod - you can tell this is a rare treat for him.

I think my favorite part of this whole exchange is when Raiden challenges Armstrong's worldview. "You weren't born poor! You've never been hungry! You don't know what it's like to fight, and steal, and kill _just to survive!"_ And I think my favorite part of this is that Armstrong _doesn't_ refute this! He refuses to victimize himself to "beat" Raiden's childhood upbringing and pretend that he's struggled. He fully understands the difference between Raiden's life and his own, as well as his own rich upbringing. And then, as a counter-argument, shows _respect_ for Raiden's strength. "But you *did* survive!" He acknowledges that Raiden did have it worse, and that he's a super badass _because_ of it. And _because_ he struggled and fought and killed his whole life, he deserved to lead the life that he did, thus "proving" Armstrong's original argument to be righteous. Through sheer force of will, by following his own set of rules. With Raiden's own two hands, he became the man that he is. Solid fucking character, dude. Love Armstrong.
@jimshotfirst48872 жыл бұрын
And at the same time it further highlights the flaw in Armstrong's logic, which is that Raiden _didn't_ survive and get to where he was just through sheer force of will. He was just another starving street rat in Liberia until he happened to get taken in by Solidus Snake and trained to be the unstoppable killer he is now, with the eventual help of his cyborg body that was forced on him by the Patriots. That's not to say that surviving all of that didn't require an immense force of will. It definitely did. But Raiden very much didn't take back his life with nothing but his own two hands. If Raiden hadn't been lucky(?) enough to get randomly picked by Solidus to be America's Next Top Child Soldier, then it wouldn't have mattered how strong his will was, the only life ahead of him would have been that of a starving street rat in Liberia. Sheer force of will means nothing if you don't have the means to act on it. Raiden understands this, but Armstrong, who has gone his entire life without ever lacking those means to do as he pleases, doesn't. Or maybe he does understand, but he just doesn't care because he's a megalomaniac who wants to bend everyone else to his will. It depends on how genuine you think he's being in his "everyone will be free to fight their own wars" speech. (edit: grammar and formatting)

@@kingkunta3753 hey, point to the part where I said that he could have survived without his insane force of will. Trick question, you can't, because I didn't say that, in fact I said the opposite. The point that both you and Armstrong missed is that force of will wasn't what got Raiden out of the streets of Liberia. Solidus Snake was what got him out of the streets of Liberia and set him on the path to what he is now. Yes, Raiden's absolutely insane force of will was 100% necessary for surviving that path, and no normal human being could have done the same. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together can figure that out. But force of will wasn't what trained him to be a child soldier. Force of will didn't give him his cyborg body. No matter how much force of will he had, Raiden never would have risen beyond his life as a street rat if a greater power hadn't plucked him out of it and dropped him into the hellscape of war. He never would have become a super powerful cyborg if a greater power hadn't decided to use him as a lab rat. Force of will was what gave Raiden the strength to seize the opportunities he was given, but it was not the *source* of those opportunities. _That's_ where Armstrong is wrong.

My favorite part of this entire thing is how Armstrong never calls in reinforcements or tries to escape at the last minute; he stands his ground against Raiden for the entire fight and almost literally doesn’t give an inch of ground, further solidifying his philosophy of fighting for nothing except your own ideals in order to change the world

The problem is everything he did before the exchange paints him as a psychopath, the exchange itself only makes him look delusional or in Raiden's words, bat-shit insane, and a huge hypocrite too, he wants to get rid of the weak when hes never experienced true hardship, he subjects others to this hardship believing its for the best, and when raiden points this out, he points at raiden saying hes the living example that his beliefs are correct, yet its clear if given the change raiden wouldve prefered a normal life, this is perhaps also the reason why armstrong finds acceptable to abduct third world children, take their brains outs, and plug them into VR simulations of everything raiden experienced as a child in order to turn them into cyborg killing machines like raiden

I like what this really boils down to is: Raiden cannot associate or feel empathy for anyone that isn't like him, and the entire game is him learning empathy. 1.) Raiden was poor, a tool his entire life, and barely knew who he is. Armstrong was rich, a natural leader, and extremely educated. 2.) Raiden cannot equivocate that someone that separate from him could ever want the same thing, understand him, or want him to understand them, they don't hold the same view they can't be the same. Armstrong WANTS Raiden to understand him, and thinks he understands Raiden, he wants to understand Raiden, and he wants to work together. 3.) Raiden only thinks about the "weak" which in reality means "weaker than me" and nothing of them beyond an excuse to be used for violence. Armstrong wants people to all be strong so that there are no weak people. Break the cycle of violence by forcing civility through power, an armed society is a polite society. He's willing to sacrifice the weakest to make the whole stronger. Raiden refuses to see this as anything beyond soulless predation. All the bosses follow this theme with Armstrong being the biggest separation. All the others he could empathize with because they were child soldiers or as damaged as he was, because Armstrong was never forced to suffer, he assumed he could hold no compassion. The song nails it home too. They were just trying to make history.
@PantherIsa9 ай бұрын
Your argument is very interesting! People find it easy to misinterpret this game. The weak and strong is not about poor or rich. He denies this by praising that Raiden fought with his own hands and got to where he is despite all the difficulties, that is BEING STRONG. Sam gives the definition of weak in the DLC while talking to Steven in the elevator. Thinking he was just another one who sends soldiers to fire while he stays in the office. In the end, he gets there and there is Steven himself, in which Sam says he judged him wrongly. The weak is also defined in Steven's words before he dies, "people who fight for causes they don't believe in, for things they don't understand". I love the fact that people misunderstand based on Steven's way of speaking as well as his appearance. But what he means covers several facts about the Metal Gear games, especially MGS2 and MGS4. To understand the character ywe also have to understand a little about his creator, the screenwriter Etsu Tamari who made a big allusion to The Boss in this character (because he loves The Boss) and that's why he was the only one to come closer to The Boss's dream. The clues for this are in MGS3 and MGS Peacewalker. In the end, in the final song that belongs to Raiden, we realized that he understands Steven, but that there is no other way to end it other than having one last fight.
