Had the chance to meet him in Venice Beach, CA. 4am at a 7-11 I was delivering Hansen juices, it was the store manager, myself when Lyle walked in, I'm a huge Raider fan, so I was introduced to him, the manager says Lyle this is Mario he brings your juices, he'd stop in for juices before he worked out. He talked 10-15 minutes with me, ran into him a couple of times after that, he remembered my name and spoke to me each time. Great Great Guy!

I’m a Ravens fan, but this has got to be one of the saddest stories in the history of the NFL, at least in my opinion. From troubled childhood, he rose from the depths and fought for happiness, even if it meant taking steroids, and he payed the price for it. His heart was so memorable and yet nobody mentions that part of him. Besides being a good football player, he’s a true hero for telling the truth and he’s a good man for what he did with children and charities. His heart was where it needed to be, always. RIP Lyle Martin Alzado.

I'm 50 now, but remember when I was a kid born into a Dallas Cowboys fan filled house where I remember three framed portraits hung up on the wall by height of importance. Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, of course, hung the highest near the wall trim at the ceiling. A foot lower than that was coach Tom Landry, followed by President Ronald Reagan 12 inches below that. My recollection of those Cowboys vs Browns/Raiders games from 1979 to 1985 were ones where we had to worry about Lyle intentionally hurting Roger Staubach and Danny White. Howie Long was great as well, but Howie would just make the normal tackle, get up and move on. Lyle, on the other hand wasn't satisfied with a normal tackle to the turf. He wanted to drive you into the ground, and rub your nose in it. He didn't want to send you to the team doctors on the sidelines to be treated to in the locker room, he'd rather send you to the doctors, unconscious, of course, at the hospital. I'll give him this credit. He was a good man with a lot of mad dog mean in him that the roids helped contribute to him to being, but at least wasn't a nasty POS like another ex Raider/Bronco in Bill Romanowski. He "mostly" tended to leave the rage on the field, though there were incidents of him pulling a Mike Tyson and chasing or following a driver that cut him off only to beat the crap out of him when the guy stopped at a convenience store. His ex-wife, Cindy, reportedly called the cops five times in their only year of marriage, but he was never arrested. The roids definitely contributed to his rage, no doubt, but I believe off the field, he could usually contain it. He wasn't off the deep end like Chris Benoit per say, but still unpredictable. Especially on the football field. I could tell in that lengthy Raiders interview that Alzado was straight up serious when he said that he believed that there was no one in the league that could kick his ass, and the look in his eyes, made me believe it too. He's in my top 5 toughest defensive players of all time at #4. Just slightly above Deacon Jones, but below #3 Reggie White, #2 Lawrence Taylor, and of course, the legend and hero to all that came after him, #1 Dick Butkis. The Monster of The Midway.

I can't bring myself to knock the man because he took steroids during his playing career because 90% of the NFL were taking PEDs, it wasn't just him and in the end he didn't lie about it, he owned up to it unlike other famous athletes he adamantly for year's denied it like Lance Armstrong did. Overall Lyle was an outstanding football player and brought alot to the NFL, I'm sure he has found what was alluding him his whole life when he died and that was happiness, the dude is in heaven, Thank you Lyle for the great entertainment you brought to all of us! That's the worst part of Lyle's life. That he grew up in an abusive household that he had to do anything and everything to help his siblings get bigger and stronger. Then in the NFL he thought he needed the steroids to gain an edge because he probably thought without them he would be cut from the team. Just like his marriages he was chasing romantic love and it didn't last long sadly. Just like his best childhood friend said he sold his soul for fame and riches and eventually it was time to collect.

@@Anonymous-jf2gy Yeah. When you get to that age its tough for teams to really make that decision to keep you on the 53 man roster. He obviously didnt come back to sit on the bench as a reserve, and if the Raiders had a young guy at DE, they wouldnt want to stunt their development by having a 40 year old guy who wouldnt have much of a future with the team. The thing is, Lyle was a gym rat, who worked out and worked hard, so his football ability wasnt just steroids, but I wonder if he was on some extra amount of juice at that time to make him competitive at that age, and possibly sped up his cancer, because its unreal to look like that, and in two years, youre dead. Idk, I loved the guy. A beast, but I truly believe he did have a great heart, and his son is right, he had nothing to gain by talking about his usage of steroids. He did it to help others stay away from them.

The key phase is admission and, therefore, was prosecution. Meanwhile, the so-called leaders were sippin juicy juice as well

Everyone who was good used steroids back then maybe he used more than most others. I think it was legal.

Lyle probably saved thousands of young boys by coming out with his admission of steroids. It was huge news for all young athletes at that time. I remember it like it was yesterday.

Lyle never played for the OAKLAND Raiders. When he was traded to the Raiders, they were already in LOS ANGELES.

I got news for you knucklehead Raider fans, Alzado's best years were as a Bronco and the Orange Crush. He played for the Broncos from 71-78 and only played for the Raiders for four years. Heck he played for the Browns for three years.

But he'll ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED as a RAIDER no matter what he did in Denver, who up until then still was a basement dwelling team without a super bowl win, while those RAIDERS were what made the league, love them or hate them nothing compares to the RAIDERNATION and Lyle was made to feel welcomed and he found a home, that's a testament to AL DAVIS, the only one who had a place and heart and home for ALZADO... Denver, please!
