It's interesting how out of place cut-throat elements feel in a game about raiding :)

I like what you said about this feeling more personal. It makes me think about how this game has a sense of the camaraderie of fellow warriors who pass on their beloved horse to someone--and Architects of the West Kingdom (the only Garphill game I own, right now), even though you never kill anyone, actually works as a cutthroat game because you are cold calculating politicians using people to make money. So it kinda works, oddly?

Wow. I probably haven't played Raiders as many times as you (only about 10), but I've only felt attacked on two occasions and only attacked another player once, in ten games.

Just bpught it and Absolutely agree. Scythia is definitely the better game, nothing wrong with North Sea. And then there is that amazing artwork, such a beautifull game to look at. Love your video's btw, I use them as last criteria when buying a game.

I can't find in the manual this situation: If you raid a camp and the result of the dice wounds make all your team die, do the raid be accomplishe or not, do I still get the raid? Or I need at least one alive? I can't find in the rulebook
@rahdo4 жыл бұрын
the rewards of the raid aren't tied to the health of your crew at all. even if they all get wiped out, you still get the VP (if your strength was high enough) and the loot and the new meeple. as a leader, YOU always make it home :)

Scythia base > Raiders of the North Sea, Raiders with expansions > Scythia. Coming from someone who have Raiders as no 2 of all time ofter Concordia. I like Scythia, a lot, and will get it (played online) but it comes short in comparing with Raiders with expansions. But it's better game to get base game to base game.

I really want to, and hopefully I will at some point, try Raiders of Scythia but I don't think I will buy a copy. As you mentioned, the fame track and the Jarls from Fields of Fame are missing in this redo and, in my opinion, that expansion works better for 2p. The quests ended up being a bit meh in my opinion. If there was some kind of new expansion/promo that would add the chiefs with the special powers, then I would be sold to stay with RoNS for sure. Those powers are the thing I most want to try from the game, how to combo them with the crew cards.

Happy to complete the West Kingdom tomorrow by receiving the viscounts and adding it to our collection. By that adding it to Raiders of the North Sea with 2 expansions. We don't mind the low level cutthroatness of raiders - no Scythia for us. But sure interesting for people who don't own raiders yet or just don't like artwork made by The Mica.

I must be crazy, something about how the game looks, is not appealing to me. Instead of an immersive theme, it looks more like a Euro math conversion abacus, spread out on the table ... then dissected into sterile sections. On the other hand, Raiders of the North Sea or even Champions of Midgard both give you the experience that you are in that world. Perhaps it's their maps, or art ... something; I'm having trouble quantifying it. I'm sure that is it just me. I am just having a hard time with the visuals on Scythia.

I picked up a copy and think it looks better on the table than it films - the card art in particular is really striking. The board itself looks pretty good too - the only issue is some of the symbols do blend with the background a little.

I am so tired of hearing people whine about "cut-throat" rules while at the same time being OK with all the passive aggressive actions that exist in almost any other game. Think about it, how many times might you have lost a game simply from being blocked from going somewhere even when there was nothing for the blocking player to gain; but that's OK? It's like everyone wants to win but they don't want any blood on their hands. I'm getting to the point where I don't want to play with anyone who's going to whine over the rules. If you're going to get bent out of shape because of a "cut-throat" rule, you're someone who I don't want to play with. Besides, if you play most games with "cut-throat" rules smartly, you can mitigate the affect of those rules. Here's an idea; it's a game..... don't take it personally. One more thing. I've taught Raiders to game newbies and in most cases they accept those "cut-throat" rules as just the rules. It's only within the gaming community that there's this concept of "cut-throat" rules.

@@rahdo "Now, You might be inclined to say 'it's just a game, you're not really hurting anyone', but that simply indicates that you feel empathy for others differently than I do." Really? A bit presumptuous, don't you think? :-) Oh, and one more thing, I have no issues with someone else using those same "cut throat" tactics against me. In fact I just shrug it off, laugh, not because I'm masochistic, but because at the end of the day IT IS just a game, the game has rules, the resources taken, money or otherwise, aren't real, and the crew aren't real.
@rahdo4 жыл бұрын
@@daveberkheimer2166 nope, i think it's a pretty straightforward factual statement that you and i experience empathy differently. there's nothing implicitly wrong about this... we probably also find different jokes funny, and have different interests as well. people are different.
