Good list! Obviously not every great film can fit into this list, so here is a handful of movies not mentioned: Being John Malkovich, Lone Star, The Three Colours Trilogy, Close-Up, Breaking the Waves, Princess Mononoke, All About my Mother, The Celebration, Chungking Express, Naked, 12 Monkeys, Underground, Central Station, The Iron Giant, Hana-bi, Run Lola Run, Safe, Braindead, Lost Highway, American Movie, and Taste of Cherry.

It’s funny you’re doing this list right now. I started a few years ago watching old movies and doing my own lists, top 30 of the 30s, top 40 of the 40s, etc. I am currently doing top 90 of the 90s. The 90s was a great decade for movies, particularly from 94-99. I think that is the best 5 years of movies ever. Some great variety too, it felt like every week there was a new, interesting movie to see, nowadays it like every 4 months.
@andrewburgemeister6684
@andrewburgemeister6684 22 күн бұрын
@@ChubbyChecker182 I think part of it was because movie complexes had so many screens so the studios were putting out more movies to have variety at those theatres. Also video rentals and home media was a big driver back then, even if a film didn’t do that great in the cinemas it could have a massive second life on home video or cable broadcasting, The Shawshank Redemption is probably the most famous example of this.

The 1990s was an incredible decade, one could say it was a renaissance in film similar to the New Hollywood period of the 1970s in terms of the number of smaller films that were coming out but leaving a huge legacy!! you kind of oknly said the positive things about the 90s this is likely because you were born in 1990, but a huge part of the 90s kind of sucked, I'm talking about the early to mid 90s, it wasn't until Tarantino that the 90s actually got good, and that was in the late 90s. Pulp Fiction is what started the quality independent movies you got from about 95-96 into the 00s. Also 1997-to 1999 was some of the best years for high school comedies, thanks to American Pie, but you had other ones like 10 things I hate about you, can't Hardley Wait, She's all that, etc. So no doubt the late 90s were good. Now my issue with the 90s is two fold. The entire Horror Genre was dead in the 90s. Until Scream in December of 96 so bassically 1997. Scream rebooted the entire Horror Genre, and allowed horror to have good actors, and slashers, etc. Before scream though way back in 1991 there was a little movie called "Silence of the Lambs" which killed horror. Along with that, and the fact movie sequels were expected to make less money, and be worse the the original you got a lot of sequels to great stuff in the 80s. Return of the Living dead 3, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3, Basket Case 2, Gate II, You get the worst Jason, Freddy, and Michael Movies, you end up with an entire genre that was awesome in the 80s and dead in the 90s until screm. So Silence of the lamb killed horror, and everyone was trying to make "Thrillers" like Silence of the Lambs, and Basic Instinct, Cape Fear, hand that rocks the cradle, single white female, etc instead of horror. A lot of early 90s movies don't hold up well, if you go watch stuff like "The Firm", or "The Net" there are a lot of Drama's from the early 90s that for some reason have a wierds look and feel to them. They have terrible sound effects, and music that seem extremely dated, and just plain goofy when you watch them today. Go watch "The Firm" again. The other thing is CGI the early 90s had a dead horror genre but what also makes it extremely bad and the worst decade for horror by far judging from 1970's till today, is CGI. The 90s was a time where CGI started being used but it looks completely horrible. So the little bit of horror we got a lot of t he times there were scenes that just could have, should have, and would have looked better if done with practical. Movies like Hellraiser 3 come to mind with the opening scene whee the guy gets ripped apart by chains. It's done with CGI and it looks terrible, in Hellraiser 1 the dad is ripped apart by chains and it's one of the best moments in horror ever, it's gruesome, and awesome, with a creepy line "Jesus Wept" I mean compare that to Hellraiser 3 chain ripping, and WTF. Another bad some other bad CGI was in Lord of Illusions, which had some insane practical gore in it, but then you have CGI like in Swans house shortly after swan "DIES". So horror was a dead genre and what we got a lot of the times was not great. Comedies like "What about Bob, Ace Ventura, Cable Guy, were great, but then you get a lot of bad movies too like Mr. Baseball, Beverly Hills Cop III, Basically what I'm saying is 1990 through 1996 was a pretty bad time with some of the least iconic movies overall, and a lot of movies that don't hold up well. The later 90s 96 to 99 were a lot better because of Tarantino, Mirimax, and Wes Craven, along with great hard R comedies. But half the decade sucked, vs the 80s which the entire Decade was awesome, because in the 80s it was Practical, the Mom and Pop VHS stores were thriving, so the demand for more movies was there, and even the cheap movies had something about them that was great, you had companies like Cannon Films in the 80s. You had writers and directors in making Iconic new movies, with new ideas. Even remakes in the 80s weren't really remakes at all, they were brand new movies that improved on an idea, like "The Fly" "The Thing" "The Blob".
