Railfan Bob on the HorseShoe Curve..Video #1

(Sorry, no trypod.) Video taken on the HorseShoe Curve in Altoona,PA in May 1995. Video starts with a westbound train going upgrade with 2 head locomotive's with no helpers on rear, followed by a westbound train (going downgrade) meeting the eastbound train on the curve. Eastbound train has 3 head locomotive's and 2 locomotive helpers on rear.

The altoona area used to be the third busiest railway in the world. I used to go there when I was a little kid. That's how I fell in love with trains.

@meccaturbo I would love to see those also! All I got is memories of back in the 60's, visiting my grandparents in Johnstown. They hand a house on a hill with a back porch that had a great view looking down onto the 4 track mainline. Also a great view of the local trains going in & out of the stealmills. I spent many hours on that back porch. And when mom & dad said time for bed, I would peak out the bedroom window watching trains. In bed the sound on the trains put me right to sleep!

Wow I really need to get there some day. I live about 40 miles south of Chicago and you never see railroading like this. where I am it is mostly METRA commuter trains all day but still you can see some freights. Even for 1995 that Camera still shoots some pretty good video. I'm looking forward to seeing those other videos Bob! I'm sure they will be great.

I wish there were some videos of Horseshoe during the last years of the Pennsylvania Railroad...circa 1966-1968....SD40's, SD45's, etc. They seem to be nonexistant.

6509 is a SD40-2, the 2nd locomotive is probably a C30-7. 5520 and the 2nd unit on the 2nd train is a SD60M, with a C40-8W and the helpers on the rear are also SD40-2.

Looks like a C30-7 on first consist, then second one looks like a pair of SD60M's or SD60I's and a CW40-8 on the lead and SD40-2's on the rear.

Your Welcome BF! I spent 8 hrs there that day. I shot Video of about 30 trains. 75 to 100 trians go by each day. Even though I uploaded 3 train videos I got better ones then this of that day. But My device I use to tranfer vidoes from VCR Or Camara went bonkers on Me. As soon as I get another device I will upload the rest that are even better then this!

The first engine in the first coal consist looks to be a SD-40-2 and the locomotive helping it appears to be a GE of some sort. What kind of engines made up the 2nd consist?

Notice the lack of graffiti on railcars back then, apparently that was not the thing to do in 1995.
