We were living in Paso Robles for about 1 year around the same time as this video. Train traffic on the UP Coast line is hit and miss most of the time. This video is very cool as it certainly brought back some good times back then as now we live in Florida. Thanks so much for sharing.

I believe that P42DC 107 is the last P42 to be built for Amtrak.

Yes! He said he remembers Southern Pacific freights coming through here. He also remembers the Coast Starlight and Coast Daylight trains. Not Daylight trains, but SDP45 powered trains with about 5 passenger cars.

The four Amfleet cars and the Dome Lounge were returning to Southern California following their use on the SP 4449's trip between Portland and Bend, OR, on June 24 and 25. I was a passenger in one of the Amfleet coaches which suffered from barely functioning air conditioning in the 90 degree temperatures.

Thanks for the information, as it is greatly appreciated. But hey, you got to see SP #4449 ! I've yet to see SP #4449 but hopefully someday.

Nice! The first train: 3 P42's, and 3 Baggage cars? Do you know why it was that way? Also, I caught #11 on Wednesday, and the video is up if you wouldn't mind looking at it. And ironically, 135 was leading. (Just noticed it on the first train)

Thanks ! The extra cars were supposedly a reposition of equipment down to the Los Angeles area. And sure thing, I'll check it out.

you're welcome! That's interesting, for sure.

The extra passenger equipment was being deadheaded back to Los Angeles after being used for the 4449 excursion in Portland the week before. The extra bag car at the rear of the train was there as a "buffer car" between the high level and low level passenger equipment, since the bag cars are equipped to be coupled to high vestibule cars but the low level passenger cars are not it's necessary. The extra bag car at the front was to comply with train handling requirements (The Conductor has to be able to access the emergency brake valve in the last car of the front 2/3 of the train, or the train has to have an EOT device. Without the extra bag car that would have been the buffer car, which was inaccessible from the body of the train. With that bag car, however, that became the last revenue coach).
