I'm jealous! I worked in that area 8 years ago and traversed I-15 many times between Great Falls and Helena. That rail line was out of service back then and I had always wanted to make up a rail rider cart of some sort and travel the whole length. Awesome video.

@@glenturney4750 The kart has a 10hp B&S. The problem was the gearing. I've increased the gear to 8:1. I have a short vid showing that. The closest rail for us to test on is 6hrs away, so it's kinda 'hope for the best' whenever we take a run.

Really cool would love to do this would love to build one of my own love the way you built your cart nice comfortable seats with the motor behind you so you're not sucking up the fumes only have one concern your axle system needs some upgrading that front one is clearly wobbling bad just use much thicker Steel I know it's probably a cost issue but other than that it's awesome the only thing I would think about doing is putting some sort of rubber on the wheels so it's quieter and more traction but thinking it through I certainly wouldn't want to smell them if they started to burn that would be a mistake we're some investigation though don't you think or some super hard plastics you could have the machined like dolorin I'm sure that's not spelled correctly but you get my idea if you build stuff this think like the wheels on a roller coaster far you could even have one of those people who owns their own digital printer or 3D printer make the wheels just for more pleasurable ride either way too cool thanks a lot I really enjoyed it

We never get chance to do this in the UK. Usually as soon as a line closes the rails and sleeper get taken for scrap. If anyone did try the police would be straight after them, unlike when a house gets burgled or car stolen where you are just given a crime number over the phone for your insurance. Loved tagging along for the ride.

Your commentary along the way (at higher level Dove in after the fact) I like your home brew motorcar, it's your channels so you do what you need to do, my thought was if you had a good understandable commentary the trip experience for your subscribers would be enhanced.

Editing? It usually also concerns discovering a/v faults instead of just "placing" clips together. During editing, if SERIOUS audio faults - or in your case, almost total LACK of audio occurs, then editing should STOP. Do the video again (as in do the full rail-run again) with "fixed" equipment. Don't just give your audience a visual with stutteringly MISSING audio. That's just arrogant in the extreme. How the hell are we supposed to "know" what you said. From 8:07 to 10:16 the audio was either completely missing, or at best a complete garble of staccato blips and burps, with NOTHING legible at all !!!! After 10:17 you have several STATIONARY CAMERA (tripod & between rail clips) with FULL audio, until finally 11:04 your hand-held camera ACTUALLY STARTED recording audio ? OMG.. That was until you LH mic collapsed at 11:57 with the RH mic following shortly after at 12:04 & went back to crappy haphazard audio again. I'm thinking VIDEO HOLDER MAN, was putting his big thumb over the mic vents, eliminating most of the full-noise audio. There were a few bumps and rail noises, but zip all of anything else. I have given up watching this "so-called" edited crap, (at 12:34) as it wasn't edited, it was just strung along one clip after the other, with ZERO editing to ensure the audio was there.

In keeping with your practice of offering unsolicited information, I'll offer mine: I intentionally play most trekking and project completion videos at 2X speed, mute the audio, and slow things down, sometimes down to 1/4 speed, if there is something I am interested in the detail of. For example, I slowed my replay of the encounter with the fishermen down to normal speed, so I could listen to the exchanged conversation. . . Just a thought. . . You know, with all your editing skills, you could make the video play backwards, and make the audio play backwards too, and then we can all find out if @Rusty Rail Runner has any hidden messages somehow blended into all the '"so-called" edited crap" as you deemed it, just like the idiots did in playing the Beetles' music backwards. . . Over in the UK, have watched some of your vids and it’s interesting to see the places you visit and go past. Hopefully you don’t get hassled by the police, I see comments about private property and stuff and don’t know the laws over there, some of the bridges and places you’ve been, don’t look like they’d hold up a full size loco never mind a full length train, doubt they’d ever be brought back into service due to the immense cost of getting them service ready otherwise they would have kept up the maintenance. This is awesome! I'm from the area. My father in law was an engineer and used to run trains on that track back in the day! I've fished and hiked all over there between Great Falls and Helena. Know that whole area like the back of my hand! Back before the railroad was around there, used to be Native American trails through those canyons, then later used by settlers headed further West! I rode my bike from GFalls to Helena and then later ran the ~90miles between the towns! My favorite place in the whole world! Railkarting looks like a ton of fun! Great video!

I really enjoyed this video. Back in 2008 I made a trip to take a friend of mine to see his son in Wolf Creek. He showed us around for a couple of days and I remember thinking, "This is the most beautiful place I've ever been!" We drove a couple miles down the road over the Hardy bridge. It’d have been more enjoyable if a brief description could be spoken, as to how the system was built, what type of drive mechanism was installed, what type of power supply was used, if it is and ICE engine or powered by flooded traction batteries or LiFePo4 batteries, what’s the breaking system etc etc. I did not see a safety restraint system on both passengers, which’s highly necessary on any moving vehicle. The proper term is embargo, not abandoned. In certain instances the carrier leaves the line intact for possible future use. The ties and bridge don't look that bad on film but I would have to inspect the line in person to make a valid opinion. Do you have any idea when the last time this line was used? This was an enjoyable film.

Gary, I was thinking that save for a little bit of brush encroachment when the fishermen were encountered and the frequent evidence of rockfall onto the tracks, this line does not look very disused. I think this line is owned by the great northern railroad and they are still in business and this line is maintained for whatever reason but now the cats out of the bag and one showed your face on video IMO Not smart . You could get a knock on you door at any time in future. Videos are fun till the long arm of the law comes down on you. Some great video boys! It's really pretty out there. I must admit, I've never been. Are there safe place to camp out that way. I have a small 18 foot camper trailer and would like to explore that area someday. I live in Nashua, NH and winter down here in South Florida. My camper stays north and basically I bought it for a "get-out" vehicle. A full tank of fuel and two 5 gallons of fuel will get me into Canada with some fuel left over for my Vespa Scooter. The 2010 Ford F-150 V-8 is a gas hog. But the truck gives a nice ride.

The seats are out of a Lincoln Navigator. The axle is just 1” cold rolled steel. Not terribly expensive. Glad you liked the video. thanks

that bent axle would drive me nutty. kinda wonder if part of a small innertube stretched tight over the wheels would cut down on noise a bit. id keep the gas engine and maybe add a hybrid option. it would be nice to have a quieter ride but with bears around it is a good idea to be noisy.

It is a lot of fun! I’ve only come across 1 tree that was too big to cut down. I have a winch on the front and I can get around obstacles as long they’re not too big. As a rule of thumb, we go up hill first. That way we can coast back if we have to. I’ve been warned the sheriff will boot us off the tracks if we’re caught. It hasn’t happened yet. Cross our fingers.

This looks like the old Great Northern route from Helena to Great Falls, which would now be owned by BNSF. If I recall correctly, Helena and Butte (a huge copper mining town) were the only Montana towns to be served by all three of the major railroads crossing the state...Great Northern, Northern Pacific and the Milwaukee.

@@SteveAdlard Good call, Stephen. Around 5 to 10 years ago I attended a combined annual meeting of the Milwaukee and UP historical societies. Despite the Milwaukee having a smaller footprint in the west and it being gone for years, most of the people I met there were from the Milwaukee side. What I really want to get to, hoping you can shed some light on this, is the most fascinating presentation regarding railroad history that I've ever seen. Years before, a fellow and his friend took a speeder car trip along parts of the abandoned Milwaukee line, in Montana and possibly Idaho..quite a lengthy trip. It was really an amazing adventure with various problems and situations encountered along the way. Do you know anything about this? I wish I would have gotten the fellows name...it would be great to have his adventure on KZbin.

Cool video! That would be a great time. Always want to join one of those Putt Putt clubs and buy a unit but it turns out that they have quite a price tag attached to them. Even the junkers are spendy.

when I lived in that area I always wanted to walk that rail line and fish as much of the Prickly pear creek as possible, I've fished a little bit of it and have caught some BIG trout.

There’s no need to bait the bears. We saw plenty of bear scat along the track. I’m pretty sure they don’t want anything to do with us.
