Railroad Crossing: Meridian Street in Anderson, IN. CSX Main Track 2

This is Meridian Street in downtown Anderson, Indiana.
A simple crossing with basic equipment. A bit of history is discussed in this video as I show you some of the changes that have taken place over the years.

My dad worked for many years as a NYC ticket agent out of the old passenger depot that's been restored. I remember as a kid walking home from school stopping off and watching pop taking care of business as the ticket agent and freight agent in his office. There used to be a signal shack called KY just west of the station when the Michigan Branch crossed the Big 4 at a diamond between Jackson and Brown Street. They eventually took the diamond out because of maintenance and derailment issues replacing it with switches controlled from Delco. I also remember (very young) steam engines coming by the depot with the major north south street crossings controlled by watchmen who manually activated the crossing gates. Man--that was a long time ago....

Pixel Chi, I love hearing these stories. If I ever were able to go back in time I'd love to see Anderson's railroad history. I can't thank you enough for sharing this. You really stir my imagination. Are you still in the Anderson area? I'd maybe like to sit down with you sometime and hear more. There are plenty of people around that have memories from that era but most don't care about trains enough to recall anything except that "there were a lot!"

On CSX's main tracks one and two, there are a total of 33 crossings. 18 have gates. 13 have flashers only. 2 only have cross bucks (no flashers or gates). My best guess is it likely comes down to available money at the time the signal was installed. No doubt if officials could afford it every crossing would be gated.
