This video really struck a chord with me. I've stood on this platform too in January and watched an Amtrak arrive. The engineer leaned out his window and was nice enough to chat with me. Further, I love this area of the Mohawk river valley. Everytime I travel the tollway, I trace the path of the New York Central, and the West Shore (where visible). Watching this train on the cams at Elkhart, its fun to see it arrive in Utica the next day. Thank you for this video.

I live in the Village of Holland Patent and love the sound of the horn as the train nears the Depot. A Depot that just recently got a plaque as a National Historic Landmark.

Have taken the Lake Shore Limited many times between Chicago and Albany (and Hudson NY when it was a scheduled stop) over the years beginning back in the early 1980's. The train (and route) is like an old friend.

I ride the Lakeshore between Boston and Rochester a couple of times a year and sure wish there was a 2nd train option at least between Boston to Albany and connecting to othere trains there. It's often full to capacity, so people are interested. BTW I always find the crews are great, and since I usually get a roomette, the train is comfortable if a bit worse for wear - the sleeper cars need major updates. I hadn't realized that the Boston section is more mileage than the NYC section. Thanks for posting that info! Another great video, Sir Rambler! Watching, as always, from Maine.

I've got an "Amtrak Vacation" planned for the first week in January -- connecting to the Zephyr from Chicago to Emeryville and back. I'll be riding this train westbound on the 6th and eastbound on the 13th. I've booked a bedroom for the whole trip and I'm really looking forward to it. Let's hope the Amtrak Gods continue to smile on me.

Give it at least another year or so. I still have yet to receive any training on the new Siemens locomotive. Very few of us have and those that did will need refreshers.

@OldTrucker958 Currently, I run Amtrak 48 and some ALB/NY trains. There was a time when I ran 63/64 every Sunday. Still qualified to run trains to Syracuse just don't make out there that often.

As you were standing on the platform the little spitters on The Polar Express locomotive sounded like you were inside an automobile with the directional signals on. We have yet to get a big snow in Milwaukee and today is in the low 50s. Perhaps a small bowl of chicken soup for the canine companion. Thanks for the view of the classic depot and stay warm

That's usually the Boston section and I ride that in the sleeper a couple of times a year. Yep...nothing like the smell of diesel exhaust on an otherwise pleasant train ride. Haha!

@@CatHeadKnows53 You are an absolute animal. My mid-train sleeper from Sacramento to Chicago provided a multi-day "exhaust high" afterwards. It was a beautiful ride though.

It's not too bad. Most of us who ride the sleepers for pleasure don't mind the loud whistle. It's a great train, I love it. Traditional dining is promised soon -- that's the main thing missing right now.

My late wife and I lived in Utica for six months in 1970. When did the overhead walkway come in? We had to walk through a tunnel to the platform. No elevators either. Nice video.

The sound was from Adirondack engine 2400 across the tracks. It’s was idling, standing by for the 1:00 o’clock Polar Express run to Holland Patent. 2400 brought up the rear of that train, approx 550 passengers in 12 cars

You have to take the Capital Ltd. Now the Floridian and change trains in Pittsburgh to the Pennsylvanian. This train takes the old Pennsylvania railroad tracks across Pennsylvania and goes around Horseshoe Curve between Johnstown and Altona eastbound to New York. The old Broadway Ltd. Used to go as a through train between New York and Chicago but with budget cutbacks that was one of the trains Amtrak chose to eliminate. The state of Pennsylvania chose to fund a state supported train between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to still provide service within PA. Amtrak choose to start and end the service in New York as they always have good ridership between Philadelphia and New York City. They also have the necessary crews and servicing facilities in New York.
