All par for the course for a broken and sorry UK. the best we can expect is decline but in reality, much worse. If the lunatics pushing net zero get their way and drive (sic) us all out of ICE cars to scalextric unaffordable exploding cars, we will need an efficient railway. It’s a loose loose situation. BR RIP

In my 21 years living in Manchester U.K., coming from the Republic of Ireland and comparing both systems over the years, with our old CIE becoming Iarnod Éireann (Irish Rail), where I’ve seen massive improvements in the Irish railways in recent years, I’ve also seen mismanagement and managed decline of the U.K. rail network, starting with RailTrack, Network Rail and the various train operating companies who are hampered and hamstrung in thier role at every turn by government policies, compared to the rest of Europe post WW2 and right up to the present day, long after the Beeching cuts in the 1960’s, where restrictive trade Union practices have also played a role - Mrs Thatcher’s efforts to privatise the railways in the 1980’s was well-intentioned but perhaps misguided in some respects, as doing so created even more problems

@@michaeljohndennis2231 Mrs. Thatcher, whilst being the beacon of neo-liberal privatisation, did not think privatising the railway to be a good idea. Whilst she dearly wanted to give her capitalist friends free money at the expense of the grubby lower classes, she was astute enough to see that it would not work in private hands for the reasons I gave in this piece. Her successor, John Major, sliced and diced the system for the freeloaders. Mrs. T. was right, privatised railways in Britain don't work.
