Note - around the 24 minute mark I am discussing the matching of the cattle farm to the demand in Toledo for cattle. A computer owner will match production in the farm to the overall demand both in terms of what the Toledo meat factory needs and what it will be able to export. So if we were playing a game and had this setup at this same point in time we might not have our meat factory in Toledo expanded to a level 2 because the overall demand in Toledo and Grand Rapids might be too low to justify the expansion. However, if we added another city that needed meat or if our cities grew and the demand grew, we could see a different result because then the overall demand for meat would increase and the supply would need to be expanded to match the overall demand. This works similarly from the supply side as well. Imagine we have several lines going out from Toledo to cities that could consume the meat, so our demand is very high. We own the cattle ranch and have it set to level 1. So the amount of cattle the meat factory in Toledo could receive is limited. The computer owner will not expand the meat factory because the expansion must line up with both the supply and the demand. If we bumped up our cattle production and capacity for delivering it to Toledo, the computer owner would expand her business because she now has adequate supply to create meat and ship it out for a profit.

I play on Nintendo Switch, and I don't know if it is like this on the other consoles, but there is no way to highlight icons and find out what they mean. I was having a similar struggle trying to understand what the different columns meant on the city demand screen. So yes, super helpful information!

Not sure why you'd want a level 2 weaving factory at 34:45 or so. The level 1 was producing 1 spare over what Toledo needed, and the only other connected city had a demand of 0.4. That leaves room to connect a third city at 0.4 and it'd still be producing enough. You essentially invested 400k (plus were forced to commit to buying the factory, even if it wasn't the best use of money right at that moment) just to speed up filling the city warehouse so the spare will show up for export faster, which doesn't seem like the greatest return on investment. The utilization rate is going to plummet once both cities have filled their warehouse - in fact, both cities together couldn't even consume the supply of the level 1, so it's definitely going to be under 50%. Maybe the faster growth rate about 10 weeks earlier for providing cloth to Grand Rapids is worth it in some cases, but it doesn't seem useful as a general rule. Am I missing something or are you just prepping for later expansion/city growth and prefer to not have to audit/adjust industry levels every few months?
@Adekyn100
@Adekyn100 5 жыл бұрын
Your analysis is correct. However, I wasn't playing a game or optimizing a supply chain; I was trying to illustrate various points. When I bumped up the weaving factory I was showing how the export to other cities needed more production than the city itself consumed to free up goods for export and didn't want to wait until the textile creation caught up to show goods available for export to other cities. Buying the textile factory had nothing to do with a good investment and everything to do with giving me control over the output of the factory for illustration purposes. And, yes, if I were playing a scenario I would not be auditing/adjusting industry levels all the time. I play too fast (shame on me) and there is too much going on in a challenging scenario to micromanage industry levels. So I would tend to bump up the industries as I had spare money and live with the consequences if they occasionally overproduced. The good news is that if you have a well-organized supply of raw materials, connected cities (consumers), and plenty of trains, the cities will tend to grow into the new production levels.

Great video covering the dynamics of supply and demand for a city and its immediate environment. I have a question on a more complicated scenario: What’s the best way to supply a finished product from one city to another when there are other cities in between - ex) Fayetteville needs lumber for its furniture industry. There’s a sawmill in Des Moines. When I produce lumber there and try to ship it, the lumber goes to Kansas City and is used up there. Should I just produce loads of lumber and then will it eventually store in KC until that market is saturated and then “pass thru” to Fayetteville ( so far that hasn’t worked)… or send it from Des Moines to an intermediate warehouse (or two) on the way to Fayetteville… or is there a way to create a line between two cities that goes thru a city in between( haven’t seen that work either as all lines seem to be point to point only). Thanks for your help
@Adekyn100

You can have a line from A to C that passes through B without stopping. It could also stop at B but not unload the good you are trying to get to C.

In case you didn't get an answer elsewhere, and for future people looking for the info, the light green represents what level of factory you're at. The dark green represents the expansion levels available based on the city size.

Very informative video n learnt so much in such a short period of time. One quick question though, when you discuss the city and it’s needs. The 1st 2 are explained very quickly and easily understood. These are what the city uses and what the city can store. On that same screen their are 3 other categories across the top (2 cogs, what looks like a scroll with a red outgoing arrow and another set of cogs on again what looks like a scroll. What are these for please.

Thanks for the instructional video but I have a question for the minimum number of waggons per train. If I know my city needs 4 waggons full of grain for example, every time the train gets to the city (0,2 demand in the city and 70 weeks time to transport it into the city(yes I am playing the long game with weeks instead of days)) then should I tell the train to just drive with minimum 4 waggons? Or should I say that it should always be minimum 8 and the game system takes over and only sends the train if it is demanded in the city? I witnessed, that when I use lower numbers of minimum waggons they take an awful long time to load and my city kind of runs dry. At least that's my feeling. Also the station at the farm is then blocked by that train because it's loading so slow.
@Adekyn100
@Adekyn100 Жыл бұрын
I don't think you issues have anything to do with how fully you load your trains. If you are getting slow loading at a raw material site (farm, mine, quarry) you probably need to level up the site so it produces faster.

I notice that you never run your trains with the mail, passenger or refrigerator cars to increase the profit. Have you experimented with these cars in your consists and find them not worth the lost capacity?
@Adekyn100
@Adekyn100 6 жыл бұрын
Hi James, I intended to do a video on the usage of the cars but so far have not had the time. As far as using them in my game play I tend to play the scenarios and missions in a very task-focused way. So I get so involved in my strategy that I don't really stop and take time to set up trains with the bonus cars. The game for me typically flows in two parts. Part one is the startup when money is tight and your focus is on growing an economic base while keeping objectives in sight. Part two is when the economy is really thriving and you can't spend the money as fast as you make it. At that point I'm usually focused on specific goals like growing x cities or moving so much mail or whatever that I don't even think about the bonus cars.Sometimes I intentionally don't use them because I want all 8 cars to deliver their intended cargo. Other times I simply forget to use the special cars.
@jwhitehv

At 5:15, you state that the warehouse size for goods is dependent on city size. I'm pretty sure it's actually the factory size. If you start in Rochester on the same map, It's size 2, and also has a 19 meat capacity at a level 1 factory. Chicago also has a 19 meat capacity in a level 5 city.

Please can someone help . In one of the scenarios I’m doing requires a express route between 2 cities. What do I need to do to complete this task .
@Adekyn100
@Adekyn100 6 жыл бұрын
Hi David, set up a line between the two cities, double track it, set signals, and supply towers. Set up a passenger and mail only line between the two cities and run the fastest train that is available, preferably one that is the Express type. Make sure you have researched the fastest train, If one of your competitors is running a faster train you will probably not get an express line. Don't run too many trains on the line, just a few so they can spread out and not delay each other with breakdowns. The line will have to run a full circuit to establish a time, then continue running until one of trains achieves an exceptional round trip time. For an example watch my video called "Railway Empire Fundamentals Applying the Rapid Expansion Strategy to the Gold Rush Scenario". kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4GXfpunjJiparM

Cool video, just one thing for us young people (take it or leave it). We're used to information being organized and structured at this point on youtube, so maybe planning the video, editing it into digestible sections so that we know what we're getting might keep us watching longer and subbing for more. At this point, investing 44 minutes into a video that is completely free-form can feel like a waste of time, especially with the added risk of not getting anything out of it. In simple words, could this video have been 10 minutes? Almost certainly. The amount of time video editors put into cutting the fat and empty space out of their videos is directly correlated with how interested the viewers will be. Spend the time and we'll love you for it :) Much LOVE x
