I travelled by this train in the year 1981 when I was ten years old. Its departure time at Chennai Central then was at 10 pm. I still remember the night sights while the train was pulling out of Central station and the thrill of going to sleep listening to the howling of the wind outside the closed shutters. The smell and taste of fresh filter coffee and hot vada at Vijayawada, the tea in clay pots and hot samoosa at Bhubaneswar and the hustle and bustle of Howrah station which was a revelation to my ten year old self. That is one train journey the memories of which I will carry to my grave.

Very good track sounds. Reminded me of my New Delhi-Madras-New Delhi days journeys in the 70s-80s in GT Express. This train is also a good train and generally doesn't run late. Mostly well before time. I have travelled in ths train also in the 90s from Howrah-Chennai-Howrah when I was living in Kolkata.

Before Coromondel started it's run this was the fastest train between Howrah and Chennai . It was known as 3 Up Howrah - Madras Mail / 4 Down Madras - Howrah Mail. In the 70s / 80s I travelled a lot on this train. Many fond memories !

Even now. Coromandel is just 1 hour faster but with 25 odd less stops vs howrah mail...

It will be convenient if it reaches by early morning 4-5 at howrah. Now it is been scheduled to depart at 7pm from MAS which was the time during colonial till later 80's. Those days it takes 2 night and a day. Reaching hwh at 12pm makes difficult for passengers

Nice coverage. I have travelled in this train right my childhood days in 1958, then hauled by a steam locomotive with my family. It was a royal train them being the most important train between Howrah and Chennai (then Madras). Though it was neglected by Railway authorities post introduction of Coromandel Express, it is nice to see some of its old Glory being restored. But still this train is not getting it's due respect and importance. For instance, as per this video this train reached Kharagpur 13 minutes late, but reached Howrah 1 hour 32 minutes late. This used to happen even in 1970s when it used to reach Kharagpur either before or on time, but would arrive Howrah 1 to 2 hours late, being overtaken by the likes of Bombay Howrah Mail, Puri Howrah Express, Ranchi Howrah Express, Raurkela Howrah Express, etc. which was not at all necessary. Why this stepmotherly treatment to this train, I wonder? I wish SER authorities note this

Chennai Howrah timings have changed ?? I Remember a 2 nights journey from Chennai , in line with the reverse timings And also The train is 123 years old , were the bridges on the great rivers Krishna Godavari Mahanadi etc were in place at that time I wonder Finally , EXCELLENT , no Gyan , your USP

@@apurbaroy312 UP Howrah Madras mail timing is same as it was in colonial and after independence era. DN Madras Howrah mail timings changed. ( Departure at MAS : 7pm earlier : 11pm) So it takes 2 nights and reaches Howrah early morning (very convenient for passengers reaching howrah. Now it takes only 1 night and reaches Howrah at 11pm (always late by 1hr - avg) which is untime and difficult to move into calcutta.

My father used to work in chakradharpur in rly electrification project. We used to visit Madras by Howrah Mail by coming over to Kharagpur At that time it was run on steam engine our train depart at KGP at 4.30 pm reach Madras third day morning 4.30 am.

Nice!! I have tons of memories over this route and the train . Thanks for showing Khurda road jn. But how come you missed Godavari Bridge at Rajamundry and the river after Barang jn is either Khatjuri or khuakhai. Mahanadi is after cuttak. Anyway thanks for sharing.

BWhat u have mentioned that crissing Mahanadi before cuttack is wrong.The river is Kathjodi.It is a branch ruver from Mahanadi.Mahanadi comes after crissing cuttack only towards Howrah line.
