Looking at this now, I'm not sure we were aware at the time of just how run down the railways had become. The locos had seen better days by then, they are dirty, rusty and smokey. Seems like nobody gave a stuff! I look back with rose tinted glasses thinking that everything was wonderful with a wide range of dependable motive power. This video destroys that myth, the railway was knackered! Thanks for sharing though Brian. 😊

You are correct, everything was looking tired but surely that was because of a blatant lack of investment by the government! Some people may say that the railways were purposely ran down to sell off cheap?! There was nothing wrong with the traction had it been correctly maintained and taken care of, this is evident in the fact that certain locomotives of this era continue to run!! Shame investment wasn’t made as other state railways in European countries work and perform well, we just have Notwork Rail charging a fortune 😢

Went here once with my dad must have been 93-94. Good spot. Some of those 31s are battered!

Thanks for these films. Was the last 47 hauled freight phosphorous tanks to or from Albright & Wilson? White and red diamond but the resolution not clear enough to read the orange un plate.

What was the train going through at 8:43, an unusual mix of coaches and didn't recognise the livery on the mk3?

I believe it was the Crewe test train....the 86 L S Lowry was the loco written off at Stafford a couple years later
