He sat outside the cafe solemnly, embracing the downpour. I looked around the rustic cafe, sparsely populated, with the last few of the regulars sitting in front of the crackling fireplace. I took pity on the old soul, he had fallen on hard times. I arose and walked to the door. "This rain isn't going to be letting up anytime soon. Why don't you take a step inside and enjoy a nice cup o' coffee stranger? On the house." He simply grinned and wandered inside to the beckoning warmth of the fire.

I slowly walked to my workroom in my château, placed in calm and nice Scottish countryside. I love it here. I always spend those rainy months here, trying to escape from the never ending buzz of London. I just made myself cup of the finest Darjeeling tea and pipe as usual. I turned on the gramophone and heard muffled sound of thunder outside. Then I sat into my club chair in front of warm fireplace, closed my eyes and pull on the pipe slowly. One log just crackled with few sprinkles of hot ash.

As I pull deeply from my warmed drink, the rain outside provides a calming effect on one who's nerves have had one too many shocking revelations. For this cold, rainy day in foggy San Fran gives an ambiance of a bygone era, of mobsters, smooth jazz, and the lustre of the Dream that never came to be. Upon this realization, I sighed and went back to the window of my apartment. What hopes and dreams did, can, or are being realized in this cruel yet lovable world of the bygone era of music.

Rain drizzled down lazily one dreary, dark New York afternoon, humming on the ground like white noise. Jones LeBlanc, aka Jonesey the Eye, pushed open the small, quaint door of a little cafe on the corner of West 83rd. The air smelled like business, a mixture of cleaning spray, bitter coffee, and cigs. He grabbed a rolled up newspaper and chose a small table in the far back corner. LeBlanc collapsed into the small, lonely metal chair, his heavy tan trench coat rustling underneath him. He leaned the small pitiful chair against the wall and placed his large, burly boots onto the table. "Waiter," he called and asked for a bitter cup of coffee. He tilted his fedora and opened the paper to the classifieds. He was pretty good at at his job, too good if you ask the Badge, so freelancing became a little "hobby" that became his "pastime". An occasional odd job or two kept butter on his bread and him out of the slammer. LeBlanc grabbed the coffee from the waitress with his left hand. He noticed a woman enter the cafe, a dame around twenty-five shuffling into the crowd with a briefcase. She looked suspiciously around. Jones leaned forward and grabbed a metal sugar dispenser with his right. She set down the briefcase a few tables away. He hovered the sugar over his coffee. She opened the briefcase fiddling around with the contents. Jones allows for a single grain of sugar to fall into his coffee. The woman looked up at him, an expression of fear crossing her face as the sugar pierced the coffee. One beat. Jones throws the sugar dispenser at the cafe window, the glass falling like glaring pieces of fireworks. Another beat. The scared customers move towards the counter immediately. A third beat. With a swift draw of his hand, he pulls out his 38 mm, aiming directly in front of him. One more beat. The dame collapses onto the table, knocking over her suitcase, and the smell of gunpowder greets the smell of business. Not that either description differed in LeBlanc's mind. He took a sip of the coffee. _Bitter...it's always bitter_ Jonesey the Eye walked over to the suitcase, reading the still, cold red numbers flashing inside: 00:01 _She was already dead..._ Police sirens could be heard outside, but Jonesey the Eye walked over to a old, lone payphone inside the cafe, an audience watching his movements. He dropped two quarters in the machine and briskly typed a number. "Yeah, it's me. It's done." He immediately hung up the phone, stepped over the pool of blood, and silently walked back out into the dreary, dark New York afternoon.

It was a cold, damp November day in a city that never sleeps. I sat behind my desk, sipping a bourbon I saved for just such a rainy day. Gumshoe work is slow on days like this; not many want to leave their homes. It takes something motivating. A push too far. There was a knock on the door, and in steps a dame; a brunette with eyes like daggers. She stood there in a composed but restless manner, staring a hole through my chest, expectantly. I'd seen her type before. "Something you need, miss?"

I watched the rain grease down the apartment window like teardrops. I could feel myself descending into a pit of loneliness. To be alone in the city streets so indifferent and cruel trapped in hues of pale blue and grey. I dread the emptiness that will soon consume me. She's still asleep, I always wonder what she's dreaming. So free she looks and innocent, I could hold her forever. When she wakes we face the nightmare. To leave my angel in this beast of a city. God I will miss her...

Finally, today was the day. I see the same man looking at the same woman every day at lunch, studying her and admiring her. Not that I blame him, she is truly something to admire. And today he made his move it seems. This man wasn't all expensive tobacco and flashy suits, he had the guts to back it up too, and it seems to be going well for him. I suddenly feel a small vibration in my pocket. I know it's from her, but I always enjoy the feeling. "You can pick me up now ;)". I smile and walk out.

I walk into the cafe around lunch time; ill affected by the adventures that occurred the night before. I sit down at a table inside, the rain has come down on the outside seating area, even though they are adorned with umbrellas. I recite my order to the new waitress; she doesn't remember my usual. A gin and tonic, always at lunch, a lightly toasted ham and cheese croissant, and a cuban cigar. Only cuban. I look up, and I see her there, alone. She's staring back. She's beautiful. I say "Hello".

Alan Jones sat in his bordeaux red comfort chair with eyes closed, listening to the sound of the rain washing away the sins of Chicago's late-night strollers. He wondered if his daughter was among them. But no, he has raised his Felicity to be smarter than that. She would be studying late into the night right now; that was how he had raised her. Alan may have made many mistakes in his life, but his daughter wasn't one of them. Mary may have passed away a long time ago, but he has made sure that, motherless or not, his daughter would grow up to be a fine, well-educated lady. He opened his eyes, took a sip of his dark coffee, and turned his attention to the folder lying on the pedestal cupboard. Grudgingly, he reached out for it. He stared long at the blank cover before he opened it. His eye shifted as he attentively read the details of the case, as he had done so many times before. The description of person his client wanted investigated matched his daughter's appearance exactly, up to the cute beauty mole on her chin that always used to make her feel ashamed as a kid. But he knew there was a mistake. Because Alan Jones' daughter was a bright, thoughtful and well-behaving university student, not the type to flirt with gangsters and other thugs. He spontaneously threw the folder in the fireplace. He took another sip of his coffee and once more closed his eyes, hearing only the sound of the crying clouds and the fire violently consuming the documents.

"Hubert Froles is no ordinary man." "Hubert Froles is no ordinary man." Hubert Froles chants this to himself as makes the long journey by foot to his blind date. It had been several days since Hubert Froles had bathed but Hubert Froles refused to care, as he is no ordinary man. As he trudged along, past the intellectually inferior masses he began to understand what his master Captain Gums had once told him, "You are no ordinary man Hubert Froles, your skin is rough and mostly moles." Hubert Froles had never before understood the meaning of the word 'and' but he began to get it, clearly it meant 'not'. Suddenly the overwhelming melody of 'Rain Drops and Puddles' assaulted the unsoothable ears of Hubert Froles, he with moles. The voices in his head had learned to play music, he found this most troubling. Shortly after stealing a child's skin, Hubert Froles could have sworn someone called him handsome as he exited his latest victims alleyway. He thought hard about that 'handsome' remark, found himself to be quite offended, Hubert Froles had always considered himself to by handlots. The sound was incredible, the mess even more so. Hubert Froles was turned into an unrecognizable liquid by an out of control blimp.
