The Lomsdal-Visten National Park in northern Norway is a real insider tip for all Scandinavia lovers who want to enjoy the wild nature without meeting other hikers on their journey. The explanation for this phenomenon is very simple: there are no books, no hiking guides about this wonderful national park. At least not in German, which reduces the probability of encountering a German to almost zero. So watch out, don’t tell anyone!
Another obstacle for hikers is the fact that September and October are the rainiest months there. But I crossed Lomsdal-Visten from the south starting in Tosbotn on 27.09.2022 ending in the north in Mosjøen on 6.10.2022. It rained one night only in the middle of the trip and the last day of hiking was quite a water parade. The rest days was quite dry, though. Why not take a risk?
There is a well recognizable trail from Tosbotn - bus drivers know the entrance to the national park and suggest stopping there as soon as they see you boarding their bus with your giant backpack. The bus from Mosjøen to Tosbotn is a bit unlucky as it arrives late in the evening. At the end of September you only have light for about 40 minutes before it gets dark - it is best to stay at the bottom of the mountain, don’t go straightly up the hill. Pitching the tent there is a real challenge, believe me.
The footpath leads along the western shore of the lake Bjørnstokkvatnan to the lake Øvre Breivatnet. From there, the path is marked by cairns - they are usually visible from afar. However, sometimes you have to make your eyes very strong to find the next one. After passing the lake Midtre Breivatnet, it is better to leave the marked trail and go to the lake Nedre Breivatnet. I rounded it on the west bank and crossed the Henrikdalselva river following further north to the river Lomsdalselva. There you can enjoy the cairns again.
Anyway, after crossing the Nedre Grunnvasselva river via a bridge, forget the beaten path for a few days - better use your map and compass from then on.
