The land on those hillsides hasn't been stable in my life time. I'm 70 yrs old.

It's like no one ever looked at California and asked how it ever came to look like it does. The whole landscape was formed by continual pushing of the shores sands, which continues today. It's nothing but compacted sand dunes! No one ever wondered how it all formed? It's no mystery why it all comes tumbling down!

I am also 70 and all my life that area has been at risk. I lived at the Portuguese Bend Beach Club in 2007 and 2008 and back then I wondered how much longer those houses would be livable!!

Don’t build your home near a moving mountain. It’s been moving for decades. It’s like building a home on a volcano. Sooner or later the house will be destroyed.
@bargdaffy15358 ай бұрын
Actually not a Mountain. Palos Verdes is an ancient Sea anticline outcropping. Uplift starting in the Pliocene resulted in the submarine formation of a doubly plunging anticline along the south side of the northwest-trending Palos Verdes fault. The anticline emerged as an island during the Early Pleistocene and became part of the mainland by the end of the Pleistocene.

It's been an ever-changing topography since I was a kid and it was called simply "Palos Verdes" and my parents could afford to live there. All of us knew the land was moving and it was no secret. The folks that offered us way too much money for our houses knew exactly what they were getting.

I live in Palos Verdes. I wouldn’t characterize us as rich. Most people bought their homes and condos years ago. My neighbor bought his condo in 1998 for 300k and now it’s 1.3 million. Doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t be able to collect aid money. My parents bought my condo in 2003 for 400k and my unit is 1.4 now. Shouldn’t preclude me from being able to receive state or federal assistance, especially since I’m sure the residents here pay more taxes than the average Californian.

The news guy said climate change for that city?? Pablo’s Verde Peninsula is a big hill. It’s been happening for 20 years and the city has not taken measure to prevent mudslides and ground shifting/movement. To be expected for hilly areas. I learned this in elementary school science and geography classes.

From 1989 study published in the journal Science Direct: The Portuguese Bend landslide represents a reactivation of movement of the eastern part of a complex of prehistoric landslides occupying an area of approximately two square miles. This latest episode of movement began in 1956, presumably in response to placement of fill during a road construction project. The active slide subsequently was enlarged by sequential failure of adjoining blocks of ground, and by September 1969 about 54,500,000 metric tons of debris was slowly moving downslope in an area of approximately 104 ha. Movement has been continuous since recent failure began in 1956, although the velocity of the active slide decreased markedly after that year. Between 1962 and 1972 the velocity fluctuated only slightly about an average value of about 1 cm per day. Movement is occurring along a distinct basal failure surface. The eastern part of the slide is underlain by bedrock and is bordered by bedrock with a general structure that limits further deep-seated propagation of failure to the east and northeast. In contrast, the western part of the slide is underlain and bordered by extensive ancient landslide deposits that are marginally stable. Further encroachment of the active slide westward and northwestward into these materials was viewed as a distinct possibility at the time the dissertation was prepared and has occurred since then. Continued movement of the Portuguese Bend landslide since 1956 has been due to four main factors. A rise in the water table during the period 1957-1968 has been documented in the northwestern part of the moving mass and is attributable mainly to infiltration of surface runoff entering numerous open fissures that cut the surface of the slide. The toe of the active slide daylights along the shoreline and is subjected to storm-wave erosion, so that any natural build-up of resisting forces is prevented in this area. The redistribution of mass as the slide has moved along an undulatory failure surface has been responsible for local fluctuations in the driving and resisting forces. Finally, smoothing of irregularities in the failure surface by the moving slide mass must have decreased some of the forces resisting movement.

My in-laws used to live there, and way back in the 1980’s they knew they had a land slide problem!! Even the old houses up there are overpriced, but because of the views and elevation that put them out of the normal housing area, they are definitely at a higher risk. Time to move into your other house!!!

@bargdaffy1535 is correct. Too bad the text was edited. Re-post? It is VITAL that the natural mass movement be distinguished from those instances where it appears that land development practices such as mass-grading (cutting the buttressing toe away from natural slopes and maximizing lot yield with fill dirt (unconsolidated material, perhaps compacted to conform with lab testing of doubtful real-world utility, perhaps not). That is, distinguish apples from oranges. One also wonders just how pinning pieces of a faulty fault together is going to accomplish much except increase the size of the failure blocks . . .
