@@therektfactory Skopje is fine, the earthquake has still generally left the city riddled with debris. Lake Ohrid is stunning. The city is beautiful and the lake tours and drinkable spring water really make for a unique experience. In Bitola, the night life is great, and the mosques and bazzars from the ottoman empire make for an interesting eperience. As someone who speaks the language, people from Skopje are generally busy and on the run. They're not as "warm" as those from other villages. They are also kind of stuck up and claim their language is the true language, and undermine the other dialects. I'm just trying to convey that there's so much more to Macedonia than just Skopje.

One of the key elements in determining where you are especially in south east asian regions are cultural landmarks. Because no two traditional buildings in Java and Sumatra looks the same, as well in Mindanao and northern Luzon regions. As someone from the Balkans, I can confirm most of it looks pretty similar. But then again, there are some distinct parts such as the Croatian coast, certain parts of Bosnia. There are also Vojvodina in Serbia and Slavonia in Croatia, which are pretty similar to each other, but different from other parts of the region.

As an Indonesian, the easiest way to identify a location is through traditional buildings and people's attire. Of course, if there are any signs or banners, that makes it the easiest way to pinpoint the exact location. Without these indicators, I sometimes mistakenly associate Indonesia with Malaysia, the Philippines, or even Colombia and Venezuela, as the vegetation is virtually the same.

@WinstonSmithGPT

@@ravenvision222 Ever been? Old Quebecoise architecture often follows French and specifically Norman forms. It seems like every village has a lovely stone church with a tin roof. The Montreal Hotel de Ville has a tall peaked roof like a French Chateau and beautiful stone walls. By contrast, Ontario traditional architecture is mostly....awful. Canadian Gothic is quite nice, although it looks pretty much like American Carpenter Gothic. But where American vernacular domestic architecture follows a parade of styles from Colonial to Federalist to Greek Revival to Gothic to a variety of Victorian styles (Italianate to Queen Anne) to Craftsman to Deco and midcentury, it's hard to pin a Canadian building to any specific period.The pricey Annex in Toronto is vaguely Edwardian/slash/Craftsman but other than that the buildings seem to follow no aesthetic schemes or eras whatsoever. Even a lot of contemporary Canadian design is just wretched--look at the horrific new homes on House Hunters or Love it or List it on HGTV. Why not put an arched single light window here and a few rectangular windows there, and maybe some random vertical panels here? In part that may be because while American contemporary houses harken back to earlier styles, if a country doesn't have any of those antecedents, there's no model to follow for guidance. This commentary mostly applies to Ontario. I've never been out west.
