You measured a ground/floor temperature of 82°F - I think it's wrong to heat the enclosure with a heatmat from underneath. Maybe in higher terrarriums for additional heat for the floor but never as the only heat source. Heat should be provided by heatpanels from above. Some more questions for you Dav: - What's the ambient temperature on let's say a branch not far away from the forestfloor? - Do you know the temperatures of the floor and the ambient temperatures at night?# - Were there any waters nearby? (Maybe we should provide bigger water features in the enclosures?) Still so impressed of this video! :-)

@@davkaufmansreptileadventures that's awesome but crazy as well. Obviously used to people unfortunately. But still really awesome. Love you Dav!!!
@davkaufmansreptileadventures5 жыл бұрын
Hi Gerrit, the temps on branches are pretty consistent with the ground temps. Ambient temps at night only vary a few degrees as the dense vegetation holds the daytime heat. The river systems and their tributaries are vast in the amazon, but there are very few lakes or other permanent water that aren't tied to or close to the river systems. Hope that helps answer your questions.

What other snakes can you keep?
@yasminfragadesouza7011 Жыл бұрын
@@mel999. the species that i now that can be legal to keep here in brazil are the rainbow boas in general, boa constrictors, ball pythons, some colubrids like black king snakes, milksnakes, caninanas, sand boas, emerald tree boas, hognoses( but as far as i know there's only one breeder allowed to breed them, so they're very rare and expensive). It may sound as much but is nothing like in the usa (like anacondas,false water cobras and corn snakes are illegal for example), and even though the native species are usually cheaper this kind of pet is very expensive here

What a beautiful specimen! It does strike me that both these boas and the other Amazonian reptiles we keep are living in the same environment as dart frogs, yet dart frogs are typically kept in far more humid vivaria than the reptiles. Indeed, they may occupy different microclimates, but surely the dry cages that many common boss are kept in cannot be doing them any good!

They seem like they reach a nice size without getting crazy like some of the other pythons. The red of the rainbow boa with the circle pattern is lovely even before you add the iridescence! Of course that's why I'm looking at a BCC too- that brighter red tail :) Both have lovely wild morphs.

Sorry I'm late to commenting on your video Dav, one of my cats had to have an operation today so I've been away from the internet. BUT what a video! I've really been excited about this one because rainbow boas might just be my dream snake! If I get one I definitely want to go bioactive, so this video has been incredibly helpful for me to plan things out and confirm it would be the best way for me to meet their needs. These 'are we keeping correctly' videos are a brilliant idea! It's awesome that you have Columbian rainbows yourself - they would be my own first choice actually; not very common to find in the UK but I'm hoping I might see some at the Doncaster reptile show in Spring. So I've had a huge smile on my face watching this. Best video yet and what a magical moment with that wild peccary! Animals can always sense someone who loves them. The jungle came to welcome you! The reason the peccary approached and followed you is almost certainly that local indigenous people raised it after hunting and eating its mother. It’s common practice to take care of offspring in such cases. I’ve seen it personally with peccaries, tapirs, monkeys and birds like macaws and toucans. I stayed with a Huaorani community in Ecuador, in a remote area near Yasuni National Park, and went hunting with them one day. They ended up killing a female peccary that had a baby, which they captured and brought back to the village to essentially raise as a pet. The young children who seemed to be caring for the baby peccary rubbed it all over their bodies to imprint their scent on it. Almost immediately it began following them freely.
