Fossils are more my thing than minerals. I love collecting carboniferous fossils here in Illinois. Cool stuff.

I had no idea about the pyrite preservation/coloration. That's the best thing I've learned all week!

Ive seen a few of those pyrite trillobite fossils with the soft parts preserved come up for sale on the private market. Thousands of dollars for a single specimen that was under a inch.

I feel like most of the trilobytes found in deep water would be pale white like most deep sea creatures due to a lack of light. Ive got a higher feeling shallow water trilobytes wouldve seen some colour variations depending on diet but likely in dark reds browns and blacks since they are suspected of having typical bottom feeder diets, and those tend to be the colours we see with bottom feeder species. Itd be cool to see em in rainbow colours and stuff but i think theyre lacking the diets we see in those kind of colourful species on earth. A lot of what things look like comes from what they ate.

That is fascinating! I knew pyrite preservation is one of the more sought after types of trilobite fossils but I didn’t know why, thanks for teaching us!

A lesson can be learned, even of humble trilobites: If they could be 'diverse' so long ago, so should we.
