What if you pulverized the super-cooled ice before adding it to the water? By increasing the surface area, you would be increasing the available space for water to cool, possibly enough to allow flash-freezing.

The specific heat of water is approximately twice the specific heat of ice. Once an ice cube has come to equilibrium with liquid nitrogen, its temperature would be -195.79 °C. 1 gram of ice at that temperature would cause 1.1 grams of water with a starting temperature of 7 °C (45 °F) to freeze. The reason for the apparent disproportionate temperatures (-195.79 °C for the ice compared to 7 °C for the water, with both of them changing to 0 °C) is due to the relatively high heat of fusion for water, 334 joules (79.7 calories) per gram. Thus, only 8% of the ice's cooling effect is needed to bring the temperature down to 0 °C. The remaining 92% is used for the heat of fusion (phase change from liquid to solid). 1)Weigh the starting amount of water. 2)Measure out an equal weight of ice. 3)Cool the ice with liquid nitrogen to -195.79 °C. 4)Combine the water and ice in a thermal container. 5) Voila, the entire contents of the container should be ice.

Please do not take this as patronizing because I mean this genuinely. Do you know what happens when two states of differing atomic motion on a large enough scale interact intimately? (Intimatly strictly being used in the context of physical contact) If you do not, then im about to tell you the most common and observed answer. The answer sadly is an explosion. Strictly dependant on the difference in temperature, it could likely result in a massive explosion that could be dangerous or potentially leathal. So while yes i do agree with you original post in a way, that i would love to see liquid nitrogen being poured on to a piece of metal that is at forging/welding temperatures (potential collab with Alec Steele sinces he's in the US now), however nate or grant attempting while welding would be potentially catastrophic. The insular layer the ice forms has an important function in nature. If you’ve ever seen a leaf encased in ice in winter, it actually acts as a shield against frost damage. Some gardeners and homeowners will even spray bushes and other plants to encourage this encasement to protect their plants through harsher winter freezes.

For science the most sense have kelwin becaus theres only positive amout (or zero) fo kelwins. I use celcius in normal life nad think its beter scale than farenheit becaus 0 is freezing of water, 100 is boiling. In the year in poland i have from minus 20 to like plus 45. If temperature is negative the snow/ice might occur, if temperature is more than i know i dont live anymore ;)

100 for boiling only at sea level. Where I live water boils in the 80ies. Also while stirring, you will never measure water to be below zero. Any time you see a puddle of water with ice in it or cup with ice, water is always exactly zero unless water is really deep then water at 4 deg celcius is heavy and sinks to the bottom. You might think water at zero is more dense cus it's colder but if this was true life on earth would t exist.

@JustFamilyThings
@JustFamilyThings 5 жыл бұрын
The freezing point of nitrogen is -346F or -210C. Under that temperature, in other words, nitrogen will be solid. The boiling point of nitrogen is -320.4F or 195.8C. Above that temperature, nitrogen is a gas. So, between those 2 temperatures, nitrogen is a liquid. Also, just FYI, “dry ice” is frozen carbon dioxide, not nitrogen. It’s much warmer than frozen nitrogen. Carbon dioxide freezes at -109F or -78.5C. It doesn’t have a liquid state under normal atmospheric pressures. It sublimates directly to a gaseous state, rather than melting into a liquid.

Ice is actually a pretty effective insulator. As the initial layers of ice form around the supercooled ice cube they insulate the rest of the water from the supercooled portion.

Research on the property called "heat capacity" water has an insanely high one, so cooling it down from a temperature above 0 probably wont make it flash freeze, maybe if you're really close to 0 already. that heat capacity is also the reason why it takes soooo much energy to boil water

Man, somehow someone needs to get Gordon Ramsey to do a parody recipe demonstration that involves putting ice cubes in liquid nitrogen to "freeze" them. "Right, now that our ice cubes are properly frozen, we can gently remove them from the liquid nitrogen. Delicious, easy to do, phenomenal. Now, onto the grill...make sure the grill is piping hot so you get that perfect sear on the ice cubes. Thirty seconds, then off, into the blender with your strawberries and cream. Beautiful. Blend until smooth, and that ladies and gentlemen, is how you make a perfect Grilled Ice Strawberries and Creme mouse. Look at that...gorgeous."

ShadowLight Gaming cream puffs are mostly air, it's not comparable to a solid ice cube. You have enough heat transfer to warm up the small mass of the puff, but clearly not enough for the ice cube. Hence the frost burns.
