As a drummer, I know how hard this is to play. Cozy is dead on time, not a glitch of off time. When he breaks into the double bass it is again dead on. And then it stops. There is a lot more than people realize that goes into this work of art. It is one thing to play a beat. This is at a much more evolved level, like telling a story , musically with a percussive set of tools. So damn tight yet he plays it loose,if that makes sense to my fellow drummers. Z

I think Cozy started that particular rhythm, with the live version from '76 reaching a big audience in '77. Rainbow reused it for Spotlight Kid in '81; Gillan with Secret of the Dance and Unchain Your Brain; Whitesnake with the live Take Me With You; and Gary Moore for Blinder. Practically every thrash band used it after Motorhead had a big hit with Ace of Spades. Talk about influential!

Cozy Powell was auditioned by Ritchie Blackmore november 1975 and had the task to play 15 minutes alone non-stop with perfect timing and he did it and got the job. Some twelve professional american drummers right before weren't able to do that. This was the first step on the way to Stargazer and Catch The Rainbow/Live.

@@KiwiExpressCream That as my first thought. So I listened to the full track. It’s very subtle, but apparent, particularly on the cymbals. Sounds like Martin Birch used two tape machines just slightly out of sync. Take a listen to the full track and tell me what you think.
@KiwiExpressCream
@KiwiExpressCream Жыл бұрын
@@scottstedeford7575 I had a good listen to my original copy and if there is any phasing, it is very subtle indeed. I don't imagine it was intentional but perhaps a natural phasing caused by two or more overhead mics being very slightly out of phase - after all, with the number of crash cymbals Cozy used, they're all going to be different distances away from each overhead mic and will be naturally out of phase. A bit like using two mics on a guitar cab, they have to be the same distance from the cone or you'll get phasing issues, so much the same I would think. Still, maybe you're right, I'd be interested to know.

People need to take a closer look at cozies custom made sticks , I use 2b and 5b , I've had the privilege of holding a pair used by cozy , they were what I can only describe as " cricket stumps" I'm not exaggerating in any way , the amount of cymbals he must have split must be in the 100s , I'd love to know if the sticks he used were available to buy when he started learning to play .
