This is my favorite Rainbow line-up. Obviously you have Ritchie since this was his band but you have Dio in his prime and just killing it and Cozy Powell like a freight train. Bob Daisey himself an extraordinary musician who later discovered Randy Rhodes and I think David Stone's Goth aesthetic melded perfectly. This really is the benchmark of excellence in Metal. Some naughty person married the Munich 1977 video with Kill the King from the live On Stage album. The song was purposely written to start the show. Rainbow from this era was one of the most intense, mindblowing musical experiences ever. Ritchie, Ronnie, Cozy playing music of the gods. Try Catch the Rainbow from the 1977 Munich show
@AlexAlexon38973 жыл бұрын
The audio and video are very cleverly put together. The track was recorded live in '76, but the video's from '77. And Ritchie Blackmore, guitarist, had just been released from Vienna jail after an onstage fight with an unpleasant bouncer! The bouncer came off worse and police were called. Great analysis, and I'm not surprised you were a little overwhelmed. Could I suggest you react to a UFO song? UFO appeal to Deep Purple family band fans. Phil Mogg, the singer, is as good as Ronnie Dio, David Coverdale, etc., but with a more "summery" tone. Out in the Street, Love to Love, or Rock Bottom, are all great songs. The guitarist, Michael Schenker, is on par with Ritchie Blackmore too. Cheers!

To correct a couple of comments here. This is live in October 1977 on the Long live Rock and Roll tour. Nothing to do with the On Stage album which was recorded the previous year on the Rising tour which ended December 1976. Kill the King was written for the stage as Blackmore thought he needed a powerful song to open the the previous tour in 1976. A studio version was finally recorded for the Long Live Rock and Roll album in 1977 and continued as the concert opener. Fun fact no one else seems to have commented on...this concert was filmed in Munich and started around midnight as Blackmore was stuck in jail after the previous gig in Vienna for two days for kicking a bouncer in the head who he saw mistreating ( natch ) a girl in the front row. Let out of jail he was hurried to Munich as the fans waited patiently for his arrival still wearing his stage clothes from Vienna and he plays a blinder. Legend. Update. I stand corrected. The audio is from On Stage while the video's from Munich 1977.

I first heard these tracks as a kid when Rainbow Rising came out on vinyl. These two tracks take up the whole of side two. For my money, there is no better side of vinyl that I have heard in the land of classic rock. Combined with Tarot woman on Side one - and this album stands a good chance of being top of the classic rock tree. Tony Carey's keyboards are also an underrated ingredient in the mix that push this album ahead of its competition.

Hi Rebeka! I love this song too! It is interesting, but the fact that it was released a year later on the record Long Live Rock'n'roll and at the concert looked exactly like on the record. And it's like a continuation of the previous epic A Light In The Black from the album Rising. In the same frenzied rhythm with a mind-blowing solo of keys and guitar.And if Ronnie Dio hadn't left Rainbow: then how many more brilliant things would have been written with Richie Blackmore.But, as fate would have it, Dio was taken to Black Sabbath and he continued to cut heavy metal.

Chess game; yes, if you read the lyrics, the Queen is doing the killing, and the song is written from the perspective of a pawn who resents being a pawn, or someone who was teleported onto the chess board and found himself in the place of a pawn. Of course, the chess game itself is another metaphor for the struggles played out in RL, as Dio pointed out in an interview. Layers and layers of meaning, as with most of his lyrics.

Epic! There is a story here. Mr. R.B was just realesed from jail before this gig. This due an odd incident that happened during a concert in Vienna some days prior to the Munich gig…Nobody actually knew if R.B would make this gig including himself…He actually entered the stage wearing the same clothes he had used there… one might see it in his persona. The Vienna police kept the «Ox» & realesed R.B…odd very odd that makes this performance even more special.
