Rainbow Mountain - A beautiful, colorful mountain in Peru
(Vinicunca in Quechua, Montaña de Siete Colores in Spanish)
Easily visited as a daytrip from Cusco, it's the second most popular tourist destination in Peru.
Drive yourself, take taxis or colectivos (public van shares), or do as we did and join a tour.
Our tour handled all transportation and included 2 restaurant meals (breakfast and lunch) for $30 per person.
The colors were "discovered" in 2015 when a massive sheet of ice and show melted, revealing the bright minerals and sediment that date back to 65 million years ago.
Thanks to social media, Rainbow mountain has become a tourist hotspot. It is undeniably beautiful, but it wasn't one of our favorite hikes simply because it felt at times like being at Disney World with tons of crowds. If you've ever visited Yellowstone in peak summer season, you know what we mean.
The colors are enhanced in this video. However, I will say that in person the colors truly are magnificent.
The intensity of the colors will greatly depend on the weather. You need just the right amount of cloud coverage and sun to really enjoy the colors at their full expression. We were very lucky!
Bring cash to pay the entrance fee (10 soles) and if you want to purchase anything else there (souvenirs, gloves, scarves, hats, sweaters, drinks, food, bathroom access!)
The hike takes about 3 hours in total. Though it is mostly flat terrain (until the very end) the altitude makes it a little difficult and you will need to take breaks.
This hike is about 5000 meters above sea level, the highest point is 5200!
Drinking lots of water and chewing coca leaves helps with the altitude.
