Yes, you are correct. Airplanes are designed to fly on 1 engine. At least passenger aircraft are. Its difficult and the plane will be very heavy and more than likely will struggle to climb, but you can technically fly normally with only 1 engine. They build them with 2 because then if one fails, its not a dire situation, but also, fly such an aircraft on one engine causes great stress on the engine. Making it more likely to fail and greatly decreasing the lifespan of said engine. It also makes it very dangerous because most planes electronics (aka the lights, autopilot etc) rely on power from a working engine. If a plane only had one engine, and it were to fail, all power and electricity would be to fail as well. Now there is a backup generator in a plane but it does not have much of a lifespan to control the entire aircraft solely for some time. And dont even get started about aerodynamics. Small planes (like cessnas) can afford to only have one engine because they are light and small so not as much drag. Plus their engines are much smaller so they arent as heavy. A massive commercial aircraft’s engine costs Between 12-40 MILLION dollars alone, depending on the aircraft and the engine needed. Having 2 engines puts much less stress on the engines to fly a plane and in doing so, will preserve the lifetime of the engine. Considering airlines make billions of dollars, this may not matter but it is all helpful in many ways other than cost effective. Its more environmental safe, the factories that make these engines like Rolls Royce dont have to make more in the same amount of time, and more than all that, its for passenger and crew safety. If a plane goes down, not only does the airline lose hundreds of millions and depending possibly even billions of dollars, but they lose their workers as well as their customers. Think if you had a small business. You have 5 workers and 30 customers. If you fired 2 workers and banned 10 customers, your business will never be the same. Those people will spread the news and your business may not thrive as well. Now imagine that but when you lose workers and customers, they arent fired or banned, but more or less dead. Anyway, yea its not so common to know but planes can operate just fine on one engine. Just for safety and cost, they try not to.

Planes fly by the way air travels about the wing, air on the bottom stays constant while the air over the top progresses faster creating less pressure above the wing. This results in lift which counters the pull of gravity enabling flight.

Actually there is one singular plane that can fly just fine with one wing, and its done it, the f-15 eagle, a pilot had their wing shot off flew all the way back to base and landed with one wing

In fact missing one engine on a plane is not as big a deal as you think considering most of the time when the plane is already in the air they only run one engine anyway. I think it's to conserve fuel or something like that (this fact does not apply to all airplanes/////do not try at home)
